SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Senior Nicole Deatherage threw 6.2 innings of scoreless relief and senior Amanda Moreland finished with three hits and three RBIs as the Sacramento State softball team downed San Jose State, 7-2, in the final day of the National Invitational Softball Tournament Sunday morning at the Twin Creeks Sports Complex.Deatherage has now gone five-consecutive games without allowing an earned run, a career-high span of 36.0-consecutive innings. The right-hander improved her record to 5-4 as she allowed just four hits while striking out four. Deatherage relieved freshman starter Jennifer Fryou who allowed two runs and two hits in 1/3 of an inning. Deatherage’s season ERA is now a minuscule 0.92.
With the victory, Sacramento State concludes the tournament with a 3-2 record, as both of the Hornets’ losses were in extra innings to 20th-ranked Arizona State (2-1 in nine innings) and Minnesota (4-3 in 11 innings). Sacramento State has still won seven of its last nine games while improving to 11-11 this season. Each of the last three Hornet losses have been by just one run.
Moreland finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBIs, including an RBI-double in the first inning and a two-run double in the second inning. The Hornets posted five runs in the second and never looked back as Deatherage retired 17 of the final 19 batters she faced. Besides Moreland’s two-run double, Sacramento State’s scoring highlights in the second inning included an RBI-single from senior Amber Dragomir, an RBI-single from senior Amy Walter and a wild pitch scoring Jessica Rojo.
Dragomir finished the game 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs as the senior continued her torrid pace. Dragomir now has a five-game hitting streak, and is batting .556 (10-18) over that span with two runs and five RBIs. She has four-straight multiple-hit games and four-straight games with at least one RBI. Dragomir, who is now tied for the team lead in RBI (eight) with Moreland, is hitting .529 with runners in scoring position and .464 with runners on base this season.
Junior Lesley Mayhorn finished the game 2-for-2 and now has a career-high five-game hitting streak. Sophomore Lindy Winkler improved her hitting streak to four games as she went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Sacramento State scored all seven of its runs in the first three innings, as the Hornets scored in the third on an RBI-single from Dragomir. San Jose State starter Becky Roark (0-2) got the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) and four hits in 1.1 innings.
Deatherage was named all-tournament as she went 2-1 with a 0.00 ERA, allowing just 10 hits and two unearned runs in 22.0 innings. The Cameron Park, Calif., native allowed just two extra-base hits (both doubles) over that span and picked up her only loss to Arizona State after the Sun Devils scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Cal was crowned champions of the tournament by virtue of its 5-4 victory over Washington. The Golden Bears have now won each of the last two National Invitational Softball Tournament championships.
Sacramento State returns to action this Wednesday, March 17, as the team hosts Iowa for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
