SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Senior Nicole Deatherage threw a three-hit shutout in the first game and freshman Amy Jo McKenzie’s two-run double proved to be the game winner in the second game as the Sacramento State softball team swept a doubleheader from San Jose State at SJSU Field Sunday afternoon. The Hornets won the first game, 2-0, before taking the second game, 4-3, in eight innings.With the victories, the Hornets snapped a three-game losing streak while improving to 6-9. San Jose State dropped to 2-11 with the losses.
In the opener, Deatherage (2-3) allowed just one runner past second base while scattering three hits over seven innings. The Cameron Park, Calif., native also walked none while striking out four. Deatherage retired the side in order in all but three innings during the contest.
The Hornets posted their only two runs of the game in the sixth inning on RBI-singles from juniors Erin Coyne and Lesley Mayhorn. Sacramento State finished the game with six hits, including two from Mayhorn. San Jose State’s Carol Forbes (1-6) picked up the loss, allowing two runs and six hits over seven innings.
In the nightcap, the Hornets scored three times in the top of the eighth inning and held on for the victory. The big blow of the eighth was a one-out, two-run double from McKenzie scoring Deatherage and pinch runner Jenni Friedrichs. Sacramento State scored earlier in the inning after a San Jose State error allowed Amy Walter to score.
In the bottom of the inning, the Spartans scored twice off Hornet reliever Brianne Ferugson. An RBI-groundout from pinch hitter Shannon Anderson and consecutive wild pitches allowing Elisa Barrios to score accounted for both Spartan runs. San Jose State had the chance to score more, but Ferguson stranded a runner by retiring Heather Lopez to end the game.
Ferguson (2-5) picked up the win, allowing two runs (one earned) and one hit in 3.1 innings. Starter Jennifer Fryou allowed just one unearned run and five hits over 4.2 innings.
Sacramento State scored its first run of the contest on an RBI-fielders choice from Deatherage before San Jose State tied the game in the bottom of the second inning.
Coyne combined for three hits in the doubleheader while raising her season batting average to .267 (the second-best mark on the team).
Sacramento State returns to action next Saturday, March 6, as the team hosts Virginia for a doubleheader at noon.
