SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- Senior Nicole Deatherage threw her fourth-career no-hitter as Sacramento State defeated Long Island, 4-0, Friday evening at the Capital Classic.The win improved the Hornets to 13-13 overall while LIU fell to 2-19.
Deatherage struck out nine, walked just one and allowed only one runner to reach second base during the game. The Cameron Park, Calif., native threw her first no-hitter as a sophomore and added two more last season, including one at the Capital Classic.
Offensively, Sacramento State was led by Amanda Moreland who was 2-for-2 and scored a pair of runs. The team scored one run in the second inning with the help of a Blackbird throwing error. The Hornets added two more runs in the third behind an RBI-single from Leslie Mayhorn and a sacrifice fly from Deatherage. The final run came in the fifth inning on a single by Amber Dragomir which was bobbled by the left fielder allowing the run to score.
Sacramento State and Long Beach State are the only two squads to remain unbeaten in the 11-team field after the first day of competition.
The team will open play on Saturday against Wisconsin at 12:30 p.m. All games are played at the Sacramento Softball Complex.
