SOFTBALL OPENS CAPITAL CLASSIC WITH WIN

SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- Erin Coyne went 2-for-3 and Brianne Ferguson threw a complete-game shutout to lead Sacramento State to a 2-0 win over Purdue at the 12th-Annual Capital Classic. The win improved the Hornets to 12-13 overall and 1-0 in the tournament. The Boilermakers dropped to 15-9 and 1-1.

Sacramento State struck first with a run in the first inning. Amber Dragomir led off the inning with a single and advanced to second. Coyne then followed with a double to left to put the Hornets on top. The team added another run in the fifth inning on a single from Jessica Rojo which plated Ashley Dawson.

Ferguson struck out five while walking one and allowing five hits to earn the win. The junior improved to 5-7. Diana LaRiva took the loss after allowing one run and four hits in three innings of work.

Sacramento State will face Long Island at 5:30 p.m. The team will open play on Saturday against Wisconsin at 12:30 p.m. All games are played at the Sacramento Softball Complex.
