SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Freshman Amy Jo McKenzie clubbed her first career home run and junior Brianne Ferguson threw a one-hitter to lead the Sacramento State softball team to a 1-0 victory in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader with UC Davis Wednesday afternoon at Shea Stadium. In the first game, the Hornets committed errors on three-consecutive plays in the eighth inning, allowing the Aggies a 4-2 victory. With the split, Sacramento State is now 3-6 overall this season while UC Davis moved to 8-4. The Hornets have won three of their last four games after opening the season with an 0-5 record.
In the second game, Ferguson (1-4) picked up her first win of the season, allowing one hit while walking two and striking out a career-high tying eight batters over seven innings. Ferguson, who faced just four batters over the minimum, did not allow a UC Davis runner past second base. She retired the final 13 batters of the game, striking out seven over that span. Ferguson’s only blemish was a third-inning single from the Aggies’ Megan De La Hoya.
McKenzie’s solo home run in the second inning proved to be the game-winning hit as UC Davis starter Lindsay Tognetti (1-1) allowed just one run and six hits over six innings. The Hornets had opportunities to score more runs, but stranded runners on base in all but two innings.
In the opener, UC Davis jumped out to a 2-0 lead after scoring single runs in the third and fourth innings. An RBI-single from Michelle Malbon and an error scoring Jenna Cresta accounted for the runs. In fact, Sacramento State committed five errors in the game as three of the Aggies’ four runs were unearned. The Hornets had entered the game with just three errors all season.
Sacramento State cut the deficit to one run in the bottom of the fourth as McKenzie singled home pinch runner Stephanie Lockhart. The Hornets tied the game in the fifth on an Amber Dragomir infield single scoring freshman pinch runner Ashley Dawson. On the previous pitch, Dawson had stolen third base to set up Dragomir’s RBI opportunity.
The Hornets’ defense went awry in the eighth inning as Sacramento State starter Nicole Deatherage retired the first batter of the inning. After the first out was recorded, errors by Dragomir, Jessica Rojo and Deatherage on consecutive plays allowed a UC Davis run to score and set up Megan Turman’s RBI-single to give the Aggies a two-run cushion. Turman’s single was the only hit in an inning where UC Davis should have been retired in order.
UC Davis’ Amy Rosson (5-1) picked up the win, allowing two runs and four hits while striking out eight over eight innings. Deatherage (1-2) took the loss, allowing four runs (one earned) and six hits in eight innings.
No players from either team finished with a multiple-hit game during the doubleheader.
Sacramento State returns to action this weekend as the team takes part in the Campbell/Cartier Tournament in Poway, Calif. The Hornets will face Loyola-Chicago and Auburn on Friday (Feb. 20), 16th-ranked Oregon and Iowa State on Saturday (Feb. 21), and Cal State Northridge on Sunday (Feb. 22).
