SOFTBALL SPLITS TWO GAMES WITH PORTLAND STATE

4/12/2003

Sophomore Erin Coyne
PORTLAND, Ore. -- All but two Hornet starters collected at least one hit, including two from sophomore Amy Hillel, as Sacramento State defeated Portland State, 6-3, in eight innings in the second game of a Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Erv Lind Stadium. The Vikings won the first game, 2-1.

With the split, Sacramento State improved to 26-18 and 5-1 in the PCSC. Portland State moved to 12-18 and 4-2 in the conference. The two teams wrap up the four-game series tomorrow (Sunday, April 13) with a doubleheader at noon.

In the second game, the Hornets scored three runs in the top of the eighth to break a 3-3 tie. Sophomore Erin Coyne led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a walk to junior Nicole Deatherage. Sacramento State took advantage of the first of two Portland State errors in the inning as Stephanie Lockhart (who pinch ran for Erin Coyne) scored after pitcher Michelle Hext made an errant throw to first base. Junior Amber Dragomir singled in the next run and another error by Hext allowed Hillel to score with the final run of the inning.

Portland State had erased a 3-1 deficit in the sixth inning with a two-run homer from Erin Stokey. Sacramento State tallied a run in the first on a Viking error allowing freshman Lindy Winkler to score. Four of the Hornets’ six runs were unearned as Portland State finished the game with four errors. Sacramento State added two more in the fifth on an RBI-fielders choice from Jillian Bivert and a sacrifice fly from Coyne.

Deatherage (12-7) went all eight innings for the win, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out eight batters. Hext (3-8) got the loss, allowing eight hits and six runs (two earned) in 7.1 innings.

In the first game, Portland State’s Morgan Seibert allowed just three hits and one run as she improved her record to 7-7. Seibert walked five batters, but the Hornets could not take advantage, leaving nine runners on base (including five in the first two innings combined).

Sacramento State opened the scoring in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk to Deatherage. Portland State scored both of its runs in the fourth inning on RBI-singles from Kayla Lewis and Erin Stokey. The Vikings totalled just six hits off Sacramento State starter Brianne Ferguson, but that proved to be enough as the Hornets left multiple runners on base in the first, second and fifth innings.

Ferguson (10-9) took the loss, allowing six hits and two runs in six innings. Winkler (2-for-4) and Deatherage (1-for-1 with a walk) were the only Hornets to finish with hits in the game.
