SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore Brianne Ferguson tossed a four-hit shutout and junior Nicole Deatherage threw a one-hit shutout as Sacramento State completed a four-game sweep of Saint Mary''s by winning both games of a Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium.The Hornets won the first game, 4-0, before taking the second game, 10-0, in five innings. Coupled with yesterday''s doubleheader sweep of Saint Mary''s, Sacramento State has now won five-straight games while improving to 25-15 overall and 4-0 in the PCSC. The Gaels dropped to 17-17 and 0-4 in the conference.
Senior Jillian Bivert was the offensive spark for the Hornets as she finished 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and a career-high five RBIs in the second game. Bivert, who now has a team-high tying 27 RBIs this year, became the Sacramento State Div. I program record holder in career RBIs with 85. The former record was 82, held by Kim Meyer (1991-94). The Hornets entered the Div. I ranks in 1990.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Ferguson did not allow a runner past second base during the entire contest as she defeated Saint Mary''s for the second time in as many days. The right-hander improved her record to 10-7 after allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out three in seven innings.
The Hornets opened the scoring with three runs in the third inning, highlighted by an Amy Walter two-run double. Along with Bivert, Walter had a big offensive day for the Hornets, combining to go 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, a stolen base, one RBI and one sacrifice bunt. The Hornets added an insurance run in the seventh inning on an RBI-bunt single from sophomore Erin Coyne.
Saint Mary''s Jennifer Eaton (9-8) got the loss, allowing four hits and three runs (two earned) in four innings.
In the second game, the Hornets scored a season-high 10 runs to go along with 12 hits as the eight-run mercy rule went into effect at the end of the fifth inning. All but one Hornet starter scored at least one run and tallied at least one hit. Besides Bivert, juniors Amanda Moreland (2-for-3 with a run) and Amber Dragomir (2-for-2 with a run and two stolen bases) also had multiple-hit games.
Deatherage (11-6) allowed a double to the first batter she faced (Michelle Hanifin) before allowing no hits for the rest of the contest. The right-hander retired 11-consecutive batters before walking Jennifer Arnold with two outs in the fourth inning. Deatherage, who defeated the Gaels yesterday, allowed just three hits and one unearned run in 12 innings against Saint Mary''s this weekend.
Bivert got the Hornets on the board in the first inning with a two-run home run as Sacramento State posted at least one run in all five innings. Sacramento State got another run in the second inning as Dragomir stole home on the back end of a double steal. Bivert added another RBI in the fourth as her single scored freshman Lindy Winkler. The Hornets broke things open in the fifth with five runs, highlighted by a two-run double from Bivert.
Jordan Larsen (7-8) took the loss for Saint Mary''s, allowing four hits and three runs in two innings.
Sacramento State, which successfully stole five bases today (two from both Dragomir and Whitnie Darvell, one by Walter), returns to action for six games next week. The Hornets host defending national champion Cal on Wednesday, April 9, for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Sacramento State then jumps back into conference play with a four-game series at Portland State over the weekend.
