SOFTBALL FALLS TO CAL STATE FULLERTON, 1-0

3/25/2001

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Eighth-ranked Cal State Fullerton completed a

three-game series sweep over the Sacramento State softball team with

a 1-0 Big West Conference victory Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium.

With the win, Cal State Fullerton, which swept the Hornets in a

doubleheader yesterday, improved to 30-8 overall and 3-0 in the Big

West. Sacramento State, which has now lost five in a row, dropped to

9-17 and 0-3 in the conference.

Hornet starter Gina Steenburgen and Cal State Fullerton starter Gina

Oaks remained in a pitchers' dual all afternoon as the two combined

to allow just one run and 11 hits in the game. Each pitcher went the

first five innings without allowing a run.

The Titans finally broke open the scoreless tie in the top of the

sixth inning after Monica Lucatero's RBI-double scored pinch runner

Kristy Halagarda with the only run of the game. Sacramento State

threatened in both the sixth and seventh innings, but could not get

on the board against Oaks (14-5), who allowed just five hits while

striking out 11 in seven innings.

In the sixth, the Hornets put runners on the corners with one out but

Oaks struck out Jillian Bivert and Jennifer Jokinen to end the

inning. The Hornets' Cathy Coupar opened the seventh inning with an

infield single and Lori Meixner was hit by a pitch to put runners on

first and second with no outs. Oaks then retired the next three

batters in a row, striking out Arlette Sunseri before inducing Patty

Villa and Andrea Becker to pop out to end the game.

Gina Steenburgen (1-4) got the loss despite allowing just one run and

six hits in seven innings. The right-hander also struck out a

season-high six.

The Hornets' Amber Dragomir and Cal State Fullerton's Yasmin

Mossadeghi each recorded two hits to lead their respective teams.

Sacramento State plays seven games next week including home

doubleheaders against 14th-ranked Oregon State (Tuesday, March 27, at

1 p.m.) and Portland State (Thursday, March 29, at 1 p.m.).
