SOFTBALL SIGNS AGOURA HIGH SCHOOL’S SHANNON KAUFMAN

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State head softball coach Kathy Strahan announced the fifth signee of its 2011 recruiting class with the inking of 5-foot-3 outfielder Shannon Kaufman. She will enroll as a freshman at Sacramento State in the fall of 2010.
Kaufman, who is a switch-hitting slap hitter from Agoura Hills, Calif., is currently in her fourth season with the varsity squad at Agoura High School. This season, she is batting .470 (39-83) with 16 runs and 15 stolen bases. A four-year varsity starter in the outfield (primarily in center), she has seven outfield assists and has yet to commit an error in 23 games this season. In addition, her batting average and stolen bases both lead the Marmonte League. With four games remaining in the regular season, Agoura is currently 15-8 overall and 8-2 in league.
Last year, she was a first team all-conference performer and team MVP after finishing the year in the Marmonte League’s top five in outfield assists (1st; eight), batting average (2nd; .405), stolen bases (3rd; 12) and on-base percentage (4th; .432).
A member of So Cal Combat Panthers’ ASA travel team since 2008, Kaufman and the squad will play at the Premiere Gold National Championships from Aug. 3-8. A total of four players from the Panthers’ roster have committed to play collegiately at Div. I institutions.
“Shannon comes from a quality ASA summer ball team and has been well coached,” Strahan said. “She knows the game well and is a slapper with tremendous speed. One dimension we’ve been looking to add next year is speed, and she will definitely help in that area.”
Kaufman joins Yesenia Alcala (Banning High School infielder), Devin Caldwell (Napa High School infielder/outfielder), Paige Martin (Mountain View High School outfielder) and Taylor Stroud (Montgomery High School pitcher) as the five players to sign with Sacramento State for the 2011 season.
