SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Three days after each being named first team all-Pacific Coast Softball Conference, it was announced today that Sacramento State senior catcher Jamie Schloredt and freshman shortstop Desiree Beltran have received first team all-Pacific Region honors.
Schloredt, who was also this year’s Pacific Coast Softball Conference (PCSC) co-Player of the Year, received all-region honors for the second consecutive season as she was a second team choice in 2008. Beltran, who was a unanimous choice as the PCSC’s Freshman of the Year, becomes the third Hornet freshman to receive all-region honors in the program’s Div. I history (1990-pres.) and first to receive first team honors – Lindy Winkler (2003) and Tami Blunt (1993) both received second team honors.
Beltran and Schloredt’s selections mark the fourth time in Sacramento State Div. I history that two Hornets were named to the all-region team in the same season (and first time that both players were first team selections). In addition, the pair becomes just the fourth and fifth Sacramento State players to receive first team honors, joining Izmena Cabrera (2008) and former Hornet All-Americans Susie Bugliarello (1995-97) and Lindy Winkler (2006).
The Pacific Region consists of teams from the Pacific-10 Conference, Western Athletic Conference, Big West Conference, Mountain West Conference and Pacific Coast Softball Conference (PCSC). The first team consists of six pitchers, two catchers, two first basemen, two second basemen, two shortstops, two third basemen, seven outfielders and three utility positions.
Both Beltran and Schloredt now have an opportunity to be named All-America when the team is announced on Wednesday, May 27, at 2 p.m. PDT via the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s (NFCA) website. The pair will try to join a list of previous Sacramento State Div. I All-Americans that includes Winkler (second team in 2006), Bugliarello (second team in 1995 and 1996, third team in 1997), Blunt (second team in 1993) and Terrie Cissna (second team in 1992).
Beltran and Schloredt, who finished the season batting in the Nos. 3 and 4 spots in the lineup, respectively, combined to bat .398 (115-289) with 17 home runs and 73 RBIs. Sacramento State finished the season with a 28-23 overall record and a 14-6 mark in the PCSC. However, the team fell just shy of winning the conference title and advancing to the NCAA Regionals, as Portland State won the conference crown with a 15-5 conference mark.
Schloredt became the first player in school history be named first team all-conference four times and receive league MVP honors on more than one occasion (also the PCSC Player of the Year in 2008). Schloredt’s .510 batting average against conference competition was 69 points better than any other player in the PCSC. Overall, she hit .381 while leading the Hornets in home runs (10), RBIs (37), walks (26) and on-base percentage (.473). One of the top players in school history, the Woodland, Calif., native ranks among Sacramento State career leaders in numerous categories, including first in home runs (35), RBIs (149) and walks (103), tied for first in batting average (.371), second in hits (215), tied for second in doubles (36) and tied for third in runs scored (99). She is the conference’s all-time leader in RBIs and walks, and is tied for first all-time (with Cabrera) in batting average. Schloredt was drafted as the 14th overall selection by the Chicago Bandits of the National Pro Fastpitch League in February, becoming the highest drafted player in Sacramento State history. She will play for the team this summer.
Beltran completed arguably the greatest freshman offensive season in school history, finishing with a .413 batting average, 23 runs, 62 hits, 14 doubles, seven home runs, 36 RBIs, a .660 slugging percentage and a .470 on-base percentage. The Agoura Hills, Calif., native becomes just the third player in Sacramento State Div. I history (1990-pres.) to hit at least .400. Her .413 average was 32 points better than any other player in the PCSC and is tied for the 37th best mark in the nation. Beltran started 47 games at shortstop, and led the Hornets in at-bats (150), hits, total bases (99) and slugging percentage while striking out just once every 13.6 at-bats. She hit safely in 36 games, and had seven different hitting streaks of at least four games long. Beltran’s seven home runs and .413 batting average were the highest numbers ever posted by a Sacramento State freshman.
