LOOMIS EARNS PCSC HONOR AFTER MONSTER WEEK

3/19/2008

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State junior Whitney Loomis was named the Pacific Coast Softball Conference (PCSC) Player of the Week after leading the Hornets to a 4-2 record last week, including a 4-1 mark at the Capital Classic.

In six games last week, the second baseman batted .364 (8-for-22) with team highs in home runs (3), RBIs (10), total bases (18), slugging percentage (.818) and runs scored (7). In addition, she had a .417 on-base percentage and handled 33 chances at second base flawlessly.

A native of Sacramento, Loomis becomes the fourth Hornet to earn PCSC Player or Pitcher of the Week honors this season, joining pitchers Kayla Meeks (March 13) and Brittani Clifford (March 4), and catcher Jamie Schloredt (Feb. 20). The weekly honor was the second in Loomis’ career.

In five Capital Classic games, where the Hornets played two ranked opponents (No. 11 Oklahoma and No. 19 Ohio State) and another receiving votes (Cal), Loomis had three home runs and nine RBIs. One of those homers was a grand slam in the Hornets’ upset victory of Ohio State. Another home run was a three-run shot that erased a 4-1 deficit in the seventh inning against Colorado State (a game the Hornets would eventually win). She also had a home run in the team’s 4-3 victory over Princeton.

A 2005 graduate of Sacramento’s Mira Loma High School, Loomis had at least one RBI in five of the team’s six games, including four against Ohio State and three vs. Colorado State. That also included a 2-for-3 performance against Cal last Tuesday with one run, one walk and one RBI. Against the 19th-ranked Buckeyes, she went 3-for-4 with three runs, a home run and four RBIs.

Despite being roughly halfway through the season, Loomis already has seven home runs, one shy of tying the Sacramento State Div. I (1990-pres.) single-season record for homers. She leads the team with 26 RBIs and is now averaging more than one RBI per game. Loomis has started all 25 games at second base, and is the team leader in runs (22), home runs and RBIs. She is batting .308, and has a .967 fielding percentage.

Sacramento State (14-11), which has won four of its last five games, has two home doubleheaders this week, beginning today against Wisconsin at 1 p.m., and wrapping up with a twin bill against Pacific on Friday, March 21, at 1 p.m.
