MEEKS NAMED PCSC PITCHER OF THE WEEK

3/13/2008

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State junior pitcher Kayla Meeks was named the Pacific Coast Softball Conference (PCSC) co-Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 3-9, marking the second Hornet in as many weeks to earn the award.

Meeks shared this week’s honor with Loyola Marymount’s Tiffany Pagano. Last week, Hornet sophomore Brittani Clifford received conference pitcher of the week award accolades.

Meeks, who earned the weekly award for the second time of her career, went 1-1 with a 1.75 ERA last week, while allowing just three earned runs in 12.0 innings. She limited the opposition to a .250 batting average and struck out seven.

Possibly her most impressive performance of the week came in a loss to 13th-ranked Houston when the right-hander allowed just six hits and three runs over 7.0 innings. Sacramento State lost the game, 3-1, but Meeks threw well against one of the nation’s elite teams.

In her other appearance during the week, the Hanford, Calif., native allowed just five hits and one unearned run over 5.0 innings in a victory over Rhode Island.

Overall this season, Meeks is 5-4 with a 2.98 ERA. She leads the team in wins (5), appearances (11), starts (10), complete games (8), innings (58.2) and strikeouts (33). Offensively, Meeks is batting .281, including nine RBIs in 32 at-bats. In addition, her on-base percentage of .390 is the fifth best mark on the team.
