SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Despite finishing the regular season with a 35-20 overall record and a 14-6 mark in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference, the Sacramento State softball squad did not get an invitation to the NCAA Regionals, as selections were made today. The Hornets were looking for their third appearance at the Div. I postseason event (1993, 1995) and first in 11 years. Sacramento State won each of its last nine conference games to put itself into position for a possible NCAA Regional bid.
Entering the week, the Hornets needed Portland State to lose just one game to Loyola Marymount in a three-game makeup series which took place Friday and Saturday in Portland. However, Portland State swept the three-game series with the Lions, winning the PCSC by virtue of its 15-5 league record and receiving the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Regionals. Portland State was placed in the Corvallis, Ore., regional with Oregon State, Nevada and Baylor.
With a 35-20 record, Sacramento State still figured to have an opportunity for an at-large berth into the 64-team postseason event. However, the Hornets were not selected and the team’s season comes to an end. Sacramento State’s 35 victories were the most since the 1995 season and the Hornets finished the year with eight-straight wins and 13 victories in their last 17 games.
Numerous Sacramento State players have the opportunity to be named both all-conference and all-region, as selections for both will be announced later this week.
The Hornets set an abundance of team and individual Div. I era (1990-pres.) records during the 2006 season. Below is a look.
