SOFTBALL TO LEARN ITS FATE ON SUNDAY AFTER PORTLAND STATE’S SWEEP OF LOYOLA MARYMOUNT
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Portland State completed a three-game sweep of Loyola Marymount today and clinched the Pacific Coast Softball Conference championship by virtue of its 15-5 league record. Sacramento State (14-6), which had its regular season come to a close last weekend after sweeping a four-game set from Portland State, would have won its first PCSC championship had Loyola Marymount won just one game against the Vikings this weekend.
However, PSU was victorious in both games over the Lions yesterday, and in the series finale today. With the victories, Portland State won its first PCSC title and will receive an automatic berth into the NCAA Regionals, which begin on May 19.
In order for Sacramento State to reach NCAA Regional play for the first time since 1995, the Hornets will now hope for an at-large berth into the tournament when selections are made tomorrow (Sunday, May 14). Sunday’s selection show will be aired live on ESPNews at approximately 12:30 p.m. PST.
Sacramento State finished the regular season with a 35-20 overall record, the team’s most victories since the 1995 season. The Hornets won each of their last eight games, and 13 of their last 17 in a year where the squad set nine school records.
