SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State senior Nikki Cinque and freshman Cassie Cervantes were named the Pacific Coast Softball Conference''s Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, after leading the Hornets to a four-game sweep of Portland State last weekend. The sweep catapulted Sacramento State into first place in the PCSC standings, a half game ahead of Portland State. The Hornets, who concluded the regular season with a 35-20 overall record and a 14-6 league record, will win their first PCSC title if Portland State loses one of its three remaining makeup games against Loyola Marymount this Friday and Saturday. Should Sacramento State win the PCSC crown, the team will receive an automatic berth into the NCAA Regionals which begin on May 19.
The awards mark the second time this season that a pair of Hornets had swept the league''s player of the week awards, with the other time coming on April 17 when Cervantes earned pitching honors and Lindy Winkler was named the player of the week.
For Cervantes, it marked the third time this season the freshman right-hander has been named pitcher of the week. The Red Bluff, Calif., native combined to go 2-0 with a 0.62 ERA in two appearances against Portland State. She threw her school-record third no-hitter of the season in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, striking out 15 batters while not allowing a ball out of the infield.
She did not allow a hit in either of her appearances against PSU, limiting the Vikings to a .000 batting average in 11.1 innings of work. Cervantes picked up her second victory in Sunday’s first game after allowing no hits and one earned run while striking out seven in 4.1 innings of work.
Cervantes (14-4) has now won nine-straight decisions and hasn’t lost a game since March 26. She has allowed just six extra base hits all season long (each of those were doubles) while striking out 221 batters in 115.2 innings of work. Cervantes remains third in the nation in strikeouts per seven innings (13.4).
Cinque, who earned pitcher of the week honors earlier this season (March 13), was named the league''s field player of the week for the first time in her career. During the four-game series, she hit .556 (5-for-9) with three runs, one double, two home runs, five walks, three RBIs, a 1.333 slugging percentage and a .714 on-base percentage. Cinque reached base safely via hit and/or walk in all four games, including a 3-for-3 performance with a home run and two RBIs in the series opener. In the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader, she went 2-for-3 with a run, double, home run, two walks (one of them intentional) and an RBI.

The Hornets are looking to make their first NCAA Regional appearance since the 1995 season, and the team''s 35 victories are the most since the ''95 squad posted 40 wins. Sacramento State set nine team records this season, and won eight games in a row to close the year. The Hornets also won each of their last nine conference games after beginning the season with a 5-6 league record.
