SOFTBALL DROPS A PAIR OF GAMES AT NEVADA

4/26/2006

RENO, Nev. – Nevada’s Cindy Elkins (4-for-6 with a double) and Candice Rainwater (3-for-6, two doubles and a home run) combined for seven hits and eight RBIs in two games to lead Nevada to a non-conference softball doubleheader sweep of Sacramento State Wednesday afternoon at Idlewild Park.

The Wolf Pack won the first game, 9-1, and came back in the nightcap to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 6-5 victory.

With the victories, Nevada improved to 3-2 against the Hornets, and 22-28 overall this season. For just the third time all year, Sacramento State was swept in a doubleheader, and fell to 27-20. The Hornets were also swept by Pacific and seventh-ranked Cal.

Nevada’s offense combined for 15 runs and 23 hits off Sacramento State starters Jennifer Fryou and Michele Bochenski. The Wolf Pack had five hitters who each tallied at least three hits during the doubleheader, including Brittany Lorenzen, who went 5-for-6 with three runs, a double and a walk.

In the first game, Nevada scored four runs in the second, one more in third, and four in the fifth to enforce the eight-run mercy rule after the fifth inning. Six different Wolf Pack players had at least one RBI, including Tyler Schafer and Rainwater who each tallied a pair of RBIs.

Nevada pitcher Jordan McPherson (14-17) got the win, allowing one run and three hits in four innings. Fryou (2-4) allowed 10 hits and nine runs in 4.2 innings. The Hornets scored their only run of the game in the second inning after Britany Crine singled home Gloria Toledo.

In the second game, Sacramento State’s Whitney Loomis (2-for-3 with two runs), Lindy Winkler (3-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBIs) and Amy Jo McKenzie (3-for-4 with a career-high tying three RBIs) combined for eight of the team’s nine hits.

Sacramento State opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning after McKenzie singled home both Winkler and Loomis.

Nevada bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game before the Hornets retook the lead in the top of the fifth on an RBI-single from Winkler.

The Wolf Pack took their first lead (4-3) in the bottom of the fifth after Rainwater ripped a two-run double.

In the top of the seventh with Nevada still leading, 4-3, Rainwater retired the first two Hornets of the inning before Sacramento State mounted a two-out rally. Loomis singled to get the rally started and Winkler immediately doubled her home. McKenzie then singled home Winkler to give the Hornets a 5-4 lead.

However, that lead was short-lived as Elkins hit a one-out, two-run double that scored both Kari Stockstill and Sarah Hunt to give Nevada the victory.

Rainwater (6-8) picked up the win, allowing five runs and nine hits in seven innings. Making her first appearance in a month, Bochenski (3-2) took the loss, allowing six runs and 13 hits in 6.1 innings of work.

Sacramento State bounces back into Pacific Coast Softball Conference play this weekend when the team travels to Saint Mary’s for a four-game series. The Hornets (6-6 in the PCSC) have just eight games remaining in the regular season, including a four-game series at home against Portland State (May 6-7) to close the season.
