SOFTBALL IMPROVES WINNING STREAK OVER UC DAVIS TO 11 GAMES WITH DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP

4/19/2006

DAVIS, Calif. – Senior Lindy Winkler had three hits in the first game and senior Gloria Toledo’s home run in the top of the eighth proved to be the game winner in the nightcap as the Hornets swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from UC Davis Wednesday afternoon at La Rue Field.

The Hornets won the first game, 5-3, and took the second game in eight innings by the score of 4-3. The only time the Hornets trailed in either game was the bottom of the first inning in the opener when the Aggies held a 2-1 lead. That lead was quickly erased in the top of the second.

With the sweep, Sacramento State won its 11th-consecuitve game over UC Davis, a streak which dates back to 2004. Coupled with a doubleheader sweep of the Aggies earlier this season in Sacramento, the Hornets have won all four meetings between the two teams this season.

In addition, Sacramento State increased its large lead in the Causeway Cup standings over UC Davis to 63.75-38.75. The Hornets already clinched the Cup two weeks ago with a win in women’s tennis action. The schools’ last meeting in Causeway Cup play will take place on April 25 when the Hornets host UC Davis in baseball. The Causeway Cup is an annual all-sports battle between the two programs.

The Hornets improved their overall record to 25-16 with the victories while UC Davis dropped to 13-27. Sacramento State jumps back into conference play this weekend when the team travels to San Diego for a four-game series.

In the first game, Winkler went 3-for-4 with two runs, a double and an RBI. She was the only player from either side with a multiple-hit game. After a two-run homer in the bottom of the first from UC Davis’ Ashley Johnson put the Aggies on top, 2-1, the Hornets immediately responded in the second after a wild pitch scored Toledo and a UC Davis error allowed Winkler to score.

The Aggies tied the game at 3-3 in the third inning, but freshman Rachel Miles’ sacrifice fly in the fifth and Winkler’s RBI double in the sixth gave the Hornets a 5-3 lead they would not relinquish.

Senior Nikki Cinque (10-10) picked up the win, allowing three hits and three runs in seven innings of work. The win for Cinque was her first since March 30, as the Hornets had combined for just two runs in her last three starts.

Lindsay Tognetti (6-10) got the loss for UC Davis, allowing five runs (two earned) and six hits in 5.1 innings. The Aggies committed three errors in the game, which directly led to a pair of Hornet runs.

In the nightcap, Toledo’s solo home run leading off the top of the eighth inning broke a 3-3 tie, and eventually gave the Hornets the victory. For Toledo, it was her third home run of the season, and the team’s Div. I school record 23rd this season.

Toledo finished the game 2-for-3 with a run and three RBIs as her two-run triple in the first inning gave the Hornets a 2-0 lead. Sacramento State added one more in the fourth on an RBI-double from Winkler.

However, UC Davis took advantage of starter Cassie Cervantes’ wildness in the bottom of the fourth. After Cervantes retired the first two batters of the inning, she proceeded to walk or hit each of the next five batters. The Aggies would eventually score three runs in the inning and Cervantes was replaced by junior Jennifer Fryou during the inning.

Fryou (2-1) was dominant in her 4.1 innings of relief, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out a pair. She retired the final seven batters she faced in order to pick up her second victory of the season. In addition, Fryou lowered her ERA to an already miniscule 0.55. Fryou has allowed just two earned runs in 25.2 innings of work this season, and the opposition is batting .151 against the right-hander.

With four more hits in the doubleheader, Winkler raised her batting average to a Pacific Coast Softball Conference-best .438, a mark which ranks 19th in the nation.
