WINKLER HITS HER WAY TO PCSC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS

4/10/2006

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State senior center fielder Lindy Winkler was named the Pacific Coast Softball Conference Player of the Week after batting .462 (6-for-13) with two runs, a walk, three RBIs, a .500 on-base percentage and two stolen bases against Loyola Marymount - the top pitching team in the PCSC - this past weekend.

The Lions and Hornets, who were selected as the top two teams in the conference, respectively, in the preseason coaches poll, split a four-game series over the weekend in Los Angeles.

Winkler hit safely in all four games of the series, including a 2-for-4 performance with a career-high three RBIs in the Hornets’ second-game victory on Saturday. In Sacramento State’s win on Sunday, Winkler went 2-for-3 with two runs and a walk. The San Andreas, Calif., native had the Hornets’ only hit in the first game of Saturday''s doubleheader, and had one of the team’s two hits in Sunday’s opener.

The award marked the second-straight week a Hornet has earned the honor, joining freshman Jamie Schloredt who was player of the week on April 3.

The award is just another notch in an incredible season that has seen Winkler record a conference-best .413 batting average while hitting safely in 25 of her last 26 games. Her current seven-game hitting streak comes on the heels of a Hornet Div. I single-season record 18-game hitting streak (Feb. 21-March 22).

The only Hornet to start all 35 games this season, Winkler also leads the team in at-bats (109), runs (26), hits (45), doubles (9), triples (4), slugging percentage (.651), walks (13) and on-base percentage (.480). She has been successful in all seven of her stolen base attempts and has been flawless in center field this year in 38 opportunities.

Currently in her fourth season with the team, Winkler is already the Sacramento State Div. I (1990-pres.) career leader in at-bats (666), runs (119), hits (231), triples (16) and stolen bases (28). She is a three-time all-conference selection, earning all-West Region honors as a freshman.

Sacramento State (21-14, 2-2 PCSC) returns to action on Wednesday, April 12, when the team travels to ninth-ranked Stanford. The Hornets will then play their first PCSC home series on April 14-15 when the team hosts Santa Clara. Doubleheader action on both days begins at noon.
