SOFTBALL’S GAME WITH PORTLAND STATE CANCELLED SETTING UP BIG WEEKEND

4/25/2005

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Monday''s Pacific Coast Softball Conference (PCSC) game between Portland State and Sacramento State has been cancelled due to rain. The game, which would have been the finale of a four-game series, will not be made up.

Sacramento State won two of three games from Portland State over the weekend and will enter next weekend’s final series of the year with a 28-21 overall record and 10-5 mark in the PCSC. The Hornets will host Loyola Marymount for doubleheaders on both Saturday, April 30, and Sunday, May 1. Loyola Marymount (32-16, 14-2) is currently in first place in the league standings, 2.5 games ahead of second-place Sacramento State.

The Hornets will have to sweep all four games from Loyola Marymount next weekend to win the conference title and gain an automatic berth into the NCAA Regionals. The Lions need just one victory to clinch their second league title in the last three years.

Should Sacramento State sweep next weekend’s four-game set, the Hornets would finish 14-5 in the conference and Loyola Marymount would finish 14-6. Sacramento State’s game that was cancelled today would not need to be made up because the Hornets would already own the tie-breaker if both teams finished 14-6.

The Hornets, who have won 10 of their last 14 games, are looking for their first NCAA Regional bid since 1995. Regardless of what happens next weekend, Sacramento State is assured of finishing above the .500 mark for the third-consecutive season.
