SOFTBALL HANGS TOUGH, BUT LOSES DOUBLEHEADER TO THIRD-RANKED CAL

4/13/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Cal pitchers Kelly Anderson and Kristina Thorson combined to allow Sacramento State one run and nine hits over two games to lead the third-ranked Golden Bears to a sweep of the Hornets in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Shea Stadium. Cal won the first game, 3-1, before winning the nightcap by the score of 5-0.

With the victories, Cal improved its record to 37-5 and extended its winning streak over Sacramento State to 13 games dating back to 2000. The Hornets dropped to 21-19 with the losses as Sacramento State had been 9-3 at home prior to today’s games.

In the opener, Anderson limited the Hornets to one run and four hits over seven innings while striking out eight. Sacramento State pitchers Brianne Ferguson (2.0 innings pitched), Nikki Cinque (2.0 ip) and Jennifer Fryou (3.0 ip) combined to allow Cal just three runs and four hits. In fact, after Vicky Galindo led off the game with a triple, the Golden Bears were held hitless until tallying two runs and three hits in the seventh inning.

At one point during the game, Hornet pitchers combined to set down 14-consecutive Cal batters. Ferguson (11-9) took the loss, allowing one run and one hit in two innings. Cinque pitched a perfect third and fourth inning, and Fryou allowed two runs and three hits over three innings.

Cal got on the board in the top of the first after Kaleo Eldredge laid down a successful squeeze bunt which scored Galindo from third base. The Bears did not have another base runner until the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh, Cal scored two more runs on an RBI-single from Emily Friedman and a sacrifice fly from Jeana Gevas.

Sacramento State got a run back in the bottom of the seventh inning after Lindy Winkler tripled home Lesley Mayhorn. The Hornets threatened to score more runs, as the team put the tying runners at first and third with two outs. However, Anderson was able to strike out Amy Hillel to end the game. With the win, Anderson improved her record to 20-1.

In the second game, Thorson struck out a season-high tying 12 batters while throwing a five-hit shutout. Thorson, who did not allow a Sacramento State runner past second base during the game, struck out two batters during each of the first six innings. Sacramento State’s Jessica Rojo had two of the Hornets’ five hits.

Cal scored two runs in the first inning on a two-run homer from Haley Woods, and added another run in the second after Cinque walked Kaleo Eldredge with the bases loaded. The Bears picked up their final two runs in the fifth inning on a wild pitch and a throwing error scoring both Eldredge and Jessica Pamanian.

With the win, Thorson improved her record to 16-4. Cinque (10-7) picked up the loss, allowing three runs and three hits in three innings. Fryou pitched the final four innings, allowing two runs and three hits.

Sacramento State catcher Erin Coyne picked up a hit in both games, and has now hit safely in 12 of her last 16 games.

Sacramento State returns to action this weekend as the team resumes Pacific Coast Softball Conference play with a four-game series against Saint Mary''s. The Hornets and Gaels will play doubleheaders on both Saturday, April 16, and Sunday, April 17, at noon. Between the first and second games of Saturday''s doubleheader, former Sacramento State three-time All-American pitcher Susie Bugliarello will have her number (No. 17) retired.
