SOFTBALL TO RETIRE SUSIE BUGLIARELLO’S NUMBER ON SATURDAY

4/13/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Former Sacramento State softball standout and three-time All-American Susie Bugliarello will have her number (No. 17) retired in a ceremony during the Hornets’ softball doubleheader against Saint Mary’s on Saturday, April 16. The ceremony will mark the first time that a Sacramento State softball player has had her number retired.

The ceremony will take place in between the first and second games of Saturday’s doubleheader, with the first game of the double dip scheduled to begin at noon. Bugliarello becomes the third Sacramento State player to have their jersey retired, joining Kristy Ryan (No. 21; women’s basketball) and Vince Beall (No. 23; baseball).

Bugliarello, who played at Sacramento State from 1994-97, was a three-time All-American (1995, 1996, 1997), all-region and all-conference selection, and established herself as arguably the greatest pitcher in Hornet history. The only player in any sport at Sacramento State to earn All-America honors three times during the school’s Div. I era (1991-pres.), Bugliarello is the Hornet career leader in innings pitched (779.0), wins (72), games started (109), complete games (102), shutouts (43) and strikeouts (945).

The Sunnyvale, Calif., native completed all but seven of her starts during her four years with the program and finished her illustrious career with a 72-38 record, a 1.03 ERA, a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 4.4:1, and limited the opposition to a .172 batting average. In 1995, she finished third in the nation with a 0.59 ERA while leading the Hornets to a 40-15 record, a berth in the NCAA Regionals and a No. 8 ranking in the final polls. Her total number of strikeouts and average of 8.5 strikeouts per game still rank among NCAA career leaders.

After her collegiate playing days, she became just the fourth athlete in Sacramento State history to compete in the Olympic Games, pitching for Italy in both 2000 and 2004.

In the midst of a season-long 12-game homestand, Sacramento State (21-17) will host third-ranked Cal for a doubleheader today (Wednesday, April 13, at 2 p.m.) before this weekend’s Pacific Coast Softball Conference four-game series with Saint Mary’s.
