FERGUSON AND COYNE BOTH EARN PCSC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS

3/21/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State senior pitcher Brianne Ferguson and senior catcher Erin Coyne combined to sweep the Pacific Coast Softball Conference (PCSC) weekly honors as Ferguson was named pitcher of the week and Coyne was named the field player of the week, it was announced by the league today.

Coyne and Ferguson were instrumental in leading Sacramento State to a 3-1 record last week, as the Hornets improved their overall record to 16-12. In four games, Coyne, a native of San Diego, combined to hit .571 (8-14) with one double, one home run and five RBIs. Ferguson, a native of Ceres, Calif., went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in two starts last week as the right-hander held both Utah Valley State and BYU scoreless.

Coyne, who hit safely in all four contests and had three multiple-hit games, also recorded an .857 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage. The four-year veteran began the week with a career-high tying three hits in four at-bats in the Hornets’ first-game victory against Utah Valley State. She came back later in the nightcap to record her first home run of the season to go along with two RBIs. She finished the week with 2-for-4 efforts against both BYU and Illinois. Coyne had at least one RBI in all four games and now leads the Hornets with 13 RBIs this season.

Ferguson allowed just three singles to go along with 10 strikeouts and no walks in 13.0 innings as opponents combined to hit just .125 during the week. Ferguson, who has won each of her last three decisions, did not allow a runner past second base during both of her starts while two of the three singles she allowed were infield hits.

Against BYU (who is receiving votes in the top 25), Ferguson threw a two-hit shutout, holding the Cougars hitless during the final six innings of the game. In the Hornets’ victory over Utah Valley State, Ferguson allowed just one infield single while striking out five in six innings of work. Ferguson already has nine wins this season (9-5, 0.87 ERA) and has limited the opposition to a minuscule .192 batting average.

A first team all-PCSC selection last year, Ferguson has now won the pitcher of the week award twice this season and five times during her career. Coyne earned player of the week honors for the first time this year and second time during her career.

Winners of four of its last five games, Sacramento State (16-12) will take the next nine days off before returning to action on Wednesday, March 30, when the team travels to Nevada for a doubleheader.
