DEATHERAGE EARNS FIRST TEAM ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS

5/13/2004

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State senior pitcher Nicole Deatherage was among 11 female student-athletes (and one of just two pitchers) selected to the 2004 Softball Academic All-District VIII first team, it was announced today. The district consists of all Div. I institutions in nine states on the West Coast.

Deatherage, who is a criminal justice major with a 3.45 gpa and is on pace to graduate later this month, finished the 2004 season with a 13-12 record and a team-best 0.96 ERA. Deatherage was named second team all-Pacific Coast Softball Conference after leading the league in ERA and receiving PCSC Pitcher of the Week honors on five occasions. Her ERA is the 24th-best mark in the nation as she became the first Sacramento State pitcher with a sub-1.00 ERA since three-time All-American Susie Bugliarello accomplished the feat in 1997.

Deatherage, who received NFCA Scholar-Athlete Award honors each of the last two years, has been named to Dean''s List at Sacramento State six times. Among Hornet Div. I (1990-pres.) career pitching leaders, the Cameron Park, Calif., native currently ranks third in innings pitched, wins, starts, complete games, shutouts and strikeouts.

To be eligible for Academic All-District honors as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 gpa (on a 4.0 scale), must be a starter or an important reserve, and be in at least their second season with the current school. Deatherage will now be added as a nominee for Academic All-America accolades with the award winners for that honor will be announced on June 3.

Deatherage was just named the Hornet Bookstore Female Student-Athlete of the Year in an awards ceremony this past Tuesday. A team co-captain, she set career highs this season in ERA, shutouts (seven), innings (188.2) and opponents'' batting average (.206). She had a stretch of 14 appearances earlier in the year in which she allowed just two earned runs over 97.2 innings.

Sacramento State concluded the 2004 regular season with a 32-28 overall record and a 10-10 mark in the PCSC. The 32 victories marked the fourth-consecutive season in which the team had improved upon its win total.
