SOFTBALL SIGNS WEST VALLEY COLLEGE STANDOUT GLORIA TOLEDO

5/12/2004

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State softball team announced today that West Valley College standout Gloria Toledo has signed with the program and will enroll at the University as a junior in the fall of 2004. Toledo marks the Hornets’ fifth signee of the year, joining four players who were inked during the early signing period.

Toledo, a 5-7 shortstop from Fremont, Calif., is a two-time Coast Conference South selection and was recently named to the all-state team by the CCCFCA (California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association). Toledo helped lead West Valley to consecutive league championships (2003 and 2004) and an appearance in the state championship this weekend in Riverside, Calif.

In last weekend’s state regional championship game, Toledo hit a one-out, walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning to give West Valley a 7-4 victory over Sierra College. The Vikings will enter this weekend’s tournament with a 39-2 overall record, including a 20-1 conference mark.

Toledo is hitting .477 (63-132) this season, which is the 10th-best junior college batting average in Northern California. She also has 37 stolen bases, 43 runs, eight doubles and three triples.

“I am thrilled that Gloria will continue her career at Sacramento State,” Hornet head coach Kathy Strahan said. “She will help fill a huge hole at shortstop left by departing senior Amy Walter.

“Gloria is solid defensively and a major threat at the plate. With the state championship coming up this weekend, she will have the postseason experience that will help in our efforts to win the Pacific Coast Softball Conference title next season.”

Toledo attended Fremont’s Washington High School, where she was a three-time all-league selection during her final three years with the team.

Toledo joins Nikki Cinque (Sacramento City JC), Hilary Johnson (Monterey HS), Amy Tompkins (Notre Dame HS) and Kayla Williams (Lodi HS) as the Hornets five signees for the upcoming season.
