SOFTBALL STRENGTHENS HOLD ATOP THE PCSC WITH SWEEP OF PORTLAND ST.

4/18/2004

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Senior Amber Dragomir combined for five hits and sophomore Lindy Winkler tallied three hits and three runs over two games as Sacramento State swept a Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader over Portland State on Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The Hornets won the first game, 5-2, before taking the nightcap, 3-2.

With the sweep, Sacramento State remains alone atop the PCSC standings with a 32-20 overall record and a 10-2 conference mark. The Hornets have now won 17 of their last 22 games and are assured of finishing the season no worse than four games above the .500 mark. Sacramento State has eight games remaining on the regular-season schedule, comprising of four-game conference series at Loyola Marymount (April 24-25) and home against Santa Clara (May 1-2).

Portland State dropped to 14-25 and 6-6 in the PCSC with the losses. The Hornets took three of four games in the series and have won six of their last seven conference games.

In the first game, Sacramento State erased a 2-1 deficit with two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. With the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth inning, Portland State third baseman Annie Peccia fielded Amanda Moreland’s hard-hit ground ball and threw wildly to first base, allowing both Winkler and Dragomir to score. The Hornets added two more in the seventh on a Dragomir RBI-single and another Peccia error allowing Winkler to score.

Dragomir and Winkler both had two hits in the game, while Winkler scored a season-high three runs. Sacramento State got its first run in the opening inning after junior Lesley Mayhorn singled home Winkler with two outs. Junior Brianne Ferguson (16-9) increased her team-high win total by allowing Portland State just four hits and two runs over seven innings. Ferguson retired the Vikings in order four times during the game and faced just six batters over the minimum.

Portland State’s Michelle Hext (9-12), who defeated the Hornets in the first game of yesterday’s doubleheader, took the loss while allowing five runs (two earned) and six hits in seven innings. Maggie DeWall led the Vikings with two hits and an RBI.

In the nightcap, Sacramento State freshman Jennifer Fryou was one out away from throwing her second shutout of the season. With one Viking runner on base and two outs in the seventh inning, Fryou fielded Whitney Olsen’s ground ball and threw wildly to first base, putting runners at first and third base with two outs. Kira Enlow followed with a two-run double to draw Portland State within one run at 3-2. Fryou was then pulled in favor of Nicole Deatherage as the senior right-hander got DeWall to ground out to the end the game with Enlow stranded on second base. The save for Deatherage was the first of her career.

Sacramento State had 10 hits in the game, including three from Dragomir and two from senior Amy Walter. The Hornets opened the scoring with one run in the third inning on an RBI-single from Winkler. The team added two more in the fifth inning on a two-run single from junior Jessica Rojo scoring Mayhorn and Dragomir.

Fryou (3-3) picked up her third win of the season, allowing two runs (none earned) and six hits over 6.2 innings. Vanessa Holm (2-8) got the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) and seven hits in 4.1 innings.

Sacramento State senior Amanda Moreland extended her hitting streak to five games with a hit in each game.
