SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State junior pitcher Brianne Ferguson was named Pacific Coast Softball Conference (PCSC) Pitcher of the Week after leading the Hornets to a 5-1 record last week. Ferguson becomes the fourth-consecutive Hornet pitcher to earn the honor as senior Nicole Deatherage received the award each of the last three weeks.In four appearances last week, Ferguson went 4-0 with two shutouts and a 0.00 ERA. The right-hander combined to allow just one unearned run and 14 hits over 24.0 innings.
Ferguson began the week by tossing an eight-hit shutout of Nevada on Wednesday (April 7). She followed up that effort with a three-hit shutout of Saint Mary’s on Friday. She picked up the win in both games of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Gaels, allowing just one unearned run and three hits over seven innings in the first game, and pitching a perfect seventh inning of relief in the nightcap.
Prior to yesterday''s loss to ninth-ranked Stanford, the Ceres, Calif., native had allowed just one earned run in 71.0 innings (0.10 ERA). During that span, she had seven shutouts while allowing just seven extra-base hits. In addition, she had won eight-straight appearances and 14 of her last 18 overall.
She is currently a career-best 14-9 with a 1.22 ERA (the second-best mark in the PCSC). Prior to allowing Stanford four runs over six innings yesterday, Ferguson had an ERA of 1.06, which was tied for the 37th-best mark in the nation. Currently, Sacramento State''s pitching staff of Ferguson, Deatherage and Jennifer Fryou have a combined ERA of 1.26, the 18th best mark in the nation.
Ferguson has now been named PCSC Pitcher of the Week three times during her career, and currently has 17 complete games and eight shutouts in 19 starts this season.
Sacramento State (29-19) resumes play this weekend as the team hosts a four-game conference series with Portland State. The Hornets will look to strengthen their hold atop the PCSC standings as the team currently has a 7-1 conference record. Portland State and Loyola Marymount are each two games back of the Hornets with 5-3 records.
