PITCHING DOMINATES AGAIN AS SOFTBALL MAKES IT EIGHT IN A ROW

4/7/2004

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State senior right-hander Nicole Deatherage and junior right-hander Brianne Ferguson combined to allow Nevada just one run and 12 hits in 19 innings as the Hornets swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from the Wolf Pack Wednesday afternoon at Shea Stadium. Sacramento State won the first game in 10 innings (2-1) before taking the second contest, 1-0, in nine innings.

With the victories, the Hornets have now won a season-best eight games in a row while improving their overall record to 26-16. Sacramento State, which also moved to 4-1 against Nevada this season, has won 22 of its last 29 games after beginning the season 4-9. The Wolf Pack dropped to 27-21 despite allowing the Hornets just three runs over two games.

Deatherage, who has allowed just three earned runs over her last 107.2 innings pitched, improved to 13-6 with a 0.60 ERA. The Cameron Park, Calif., native went all 10 innings in the first game and allowed just four hits and one run while striking out eight batters. Her 13 wins ties a career high (set last season) as she has allowed one earned run or less during each of her last 15 appearances.

In the first game, both Deatherage and Tiffany Hoeft were locked in a pitchers’ duel as both teams were scoreless through the first five innings. Nevada got on the board first in the top of the sixth after Annie Stevens singled home Cindy Elkins. The Wolf Pack had an opportunity to score more in the inning, but Deatherage got out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam by retiring Brittany Lorenzen and Lindsey Hall.

Sacramento State evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth after pinch runner Stephanie Lockhart scored from second base on a Lesley Mayhorn single. Lockhart, who was held up at third base on the single, scored after Elkins bobbled the ball in right field. The Hornets, who left at least one runner on base during the first six innings of the game, finally ended the contest in the 10th inning with a two-out, bases-loaded single from junior Erin Coyne. The Hornets loaded the bases with no outs in the inning, but Hoeft retired Amy Walter and Amy Jo McKenzie, before Coyne recorded her team-high tying eighth two-out RBI of the season.

Hoeft (8-7) got the loss despite allowing just eight hits and two runs over 9.2 innings. The Hornets’ Lindy Winkler, Amber Dragomir, Lesley Mayhorn and Coyne each had two hits as Sacramento State left 10 runners on base. Nevada left seven runners on base as Deatherage retired the first 10 Nevada batters of the game.

In the nightcap, Ferguson threw her second shutout against Nevada this year as the Ceres, Calif., native allowed eight hits while striking out seven over nine innings. Ferguson has thrown shutouts in four of her last five starts as she improved to 11-8 this season with a 1.20 ERA. Deatherage and Ferguson are now first and second, respectively, in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference in earned run average.

The Hornets scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the ninth after Winkler’s one-out single scored pinch runner Katie Rhoe. The Hornets and Wolf Pack each finished with eight hits as both teams had runners on base throughout the game. The Wolf Pack got two hits apiece from Elkins and Stacy Mueller, and three more from Jamie Waldron to account for all but one of the team’s hits.

The Hornets, who left 11 runners on base, received three hits from Winkler and two from McKenzie. Winkler has now hit safely in 15 of her last 16 games and is batting .574 (24-for-47) over that span.

Nevada’s Candice Rainwater (8-6) got the loss, allowing one run and eight hits in 8.1 innings.

Sacramento State returns to action this Friday, April 9, for the beginning of a four-game series on the road with conference-rival Saint Mary’s. The teams will play doubleheaders on both Friday and Saturday at noon.
