FIVE TIMES AND COUNTING....DEATHERAGE EARNS PCSC HONORS AGAIN

4/6/2004

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – For the fourth-consecutive week and the fifth time in six weeks, Sacramento State senior right-handed pitcher Nicole Deatherage earned Pacific Coast Softball Conference (PCSC) Pitcher of the Week honors, it was announced by the league today.

Deatherage led the Hornets to a 6-0 record last week, as the team co-captain went 3-0 with three shutouts and a 0.00 ERA. Deatherage, who is now 12-6 with a PCSC-best 0.59 ERA this season, has allowed just two earned runs over her last 97.2 innings, a span of 14 appearances. During that time, she has posted a 0.12 ERA while walking seven and striking out 78 batters.

The Cameron Park, Calif., native posted a six-hit shutout of Nevada on Tuesday and came back to post a four-hit shutout of San Diego on Saturday and a six-hitter against the Toreros on Sunday. In Saturday’s victory, Deatherage faced just three batters over the minimum while not allowing a San Diego runner past second base.

Deatherage has won seven of her last eight decisions and is now just one victory shy of her career high (13 set last season). In addition, this week''s honor marks her eighth-career conference pitcher of the week award.

Since the second game of the season, Deatherage has dropped her earned run average 168 points (from 2.27 to its current mark of 0.59). Deatherage, who was an all-PCSC selection last season, was drafted by the Sacramento Sunbirds of the National Pro Fastpitch League this past December.

Sacramento State returns to action on Wednesday, April 7, for a home non-conference doubleheader against Nevada. Game time at Shea Stadium is 1 p.m. Deatherage will try to increase her streak of consecutive shutouts to four as she will pitch the first game of the double dip. The Hornets have won nine of their last 10 games and are currently 24-16 overall and 4-0 in the PCSC.
