SOFTBALL’S WINNING STREAK AT SIX AFTER FOUR-GAME SWEEP OF USD

4/4/2004

SAN DIEGO -- Senior pitcher Nicole Deatherage tossed her third-consecutive shutout and the Hornets exploded for 11 runs and 16 hits in two games as the Sacramento State softball team completed a four-game sweep of San Diego in a Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at the USD Softball Complex. The Hornets won the first game, 2-0, before winning the second game, 9-1, in five innings.

Sacramento State has now won six straight and nine of its last 10 while improving to 24-16 overall and 4-0 in the PCSC. The Hornets’ pitching duo of Deatherage and junior Brianne Ferguson have combined to allow just one run in the last six games. Deatherage has now allowed just two earned runs over her last 97.2 innings, a span of 14 appearances. During that time, she has posted a 0.12 ERA while walking seven and striking out 78 batters. Ferguson has five shutouts in her last seven appearances while allowing just one earned run over her last seven appearances (0.15 ERA).

San Diego dropped to 13-20 and 0-4 with the losses as the Toreros have now been outscored, 22-1, by the Hornets in five contests this season. The Hornets’ nine runs in the second game were a season high, and the team’s 11 hits tied a season high. Sophomore Lindy Winkler had two hits in both games, finishing the doubleheader 4-for-5 with two walks, two runs, two stolen bases and an RBI. The center fielder has hit safely in 13 of her last 14 games and is batting .500 (19-for-38) over that span. Juniors Jessica Rojo and Erin Coyne each has three hits in the doubleheader as Coyne finished the week with a .412 batting average (7-for-17) and a team-best four RBIs.

In the first game, Rojo’s two-out, two-run single in the second inning accounted for the only runs of the game as San Diego starter Anna Russell and Deatherage were locked in a pitchers’ dual. The Toreros had at least one runner on base in all but two innings, but could not get a run across. In the third inning, San Diego had runners at the corners with one out, but Deatherage struck out Rebekah Bradford and induced Sara Mason to fly out to end the inning.

San Diego threatened again in the fifth inning, but Sacramento State left fielder Lesley Mayhorn threw out Gina McFarland at the plate after she tried to score from second base on a single from Bradford. Mayhorn threw another runner out at the plate in the second game as the junior now leads all Sacramento State outfielders this season with five assists.

With the win, Deatherage improved to 12-6 with a 0.59 ERA, as her 12 wins are one shy of her career high (set last season). Russell (7-4) lost for the second-consecutive day to the Hornets, allowing two runs and five hits in six innings.

In the nightcap, the Hornets posted four runs in the second and five more in the fourth as the eight-run mercy rule went into effect after Sacramento State led, 9-1, after five innings. The Hornets’ second inning was highlighted by RBI-doubles from Amanda Moreland and Amy Hillel, and an RBI-single from Winkler. Sacramento State’s fourth inning included a pair of two-run doubles from Amy Walter and Coyne, and an RBI-single from Rojo. The Hornets finished the game with four doubles.

Ferguson got the win while improving to a season-best 10-8 (1.30 ERA) this season. The Ceres, Calif., native allowed one unearned run and three hits in five innings. The unearned run snapped a string of three-consecutive shutouts from Ferguson. San Diego starter Erin Harmonson (1-5) lasted just 1.2 innings, allowing four hits and four runs.

Freshman Amy Jo McKenzie went 2-for-2 in the second game and is now batting .625 (5-for-8) with two doubles over her last three games.

Sacramento State looks to continue its winning ways on Wednesday, April 7, as the team welcomes Nevada to Shea Stadium for a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.
