FORMAN-LAU PITCHES SANTA CLARA TO DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OF SOFTBALL

4/27/2003

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara pitcher Jaime Forman-Lau threw all 16 innings of today''s doubleheader while picking up wins in both games as the Broncos swept a Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader from Sacramento State Sunday afternoon at Marsalli Park. Santa Clara won the first game in nine innings, 2-1, before winning the second game, 5-3.

Forman-Lau (18-11) picked up all three victories for Santa Clara over the weekend as the Broncos won three of four games from the Hornets. Forman-Lau, who has already been named PCSC Pitcher of the Week five times this season, allowed just three hits and one run in nine innings in the first game, before coming back in the nightcap to allow three runs and nine hits over seven innings. She struck out six batters in both games while combining to walk just two.

Santa Clara''s record moves to 27-22 overall and 9-3 in PCSC. The team''s 27 victories surpassed the previous program record of 26, set during the 1986 season. Sacramento State fell to 29-25 and 8-8 in the conference. The Hornets have now lost 10 of their last 14 games with six of those losses coming by two runs or less.

The Hornets were led by junior Amanda Moreland who homered for the second time in as many days and senior Jillian Bivert who clubbed her team-best fourth home run of the season in the second game. Bivert finished with three RBIs in the second game and now leads the team with 35 RBIs this season.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Coresta Salas'' leadoff homer in the top of the ninth inning proved to be the game-winning run as Sacramento State could not respond in the bottom half of the inning. Per conference rules, Sacramento State was the home team and batted second in both contests. The Hornets opened the game''s scoring in the second inning on Moreland''s solo home run before Santa Clara tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth with an unearned run. Both teams remained scoreless until the ninth inning as Hornet starter Nicole Deatherage and Forman-Lau were locked in a pitchers'' dual for the second-consecutive day.

Forman-Lau faced just five batters over the minimum to get the win while Deatherage (13-11) was the hard-luck loser for the second-straight day, allowing just two runs (one earned) and nine hits in nine innings.

In the nightcap, Sacramento State scored two runs in the first and one more in the third to take an early 3-0 lead. The Hornets began the first inning with four-consecutive singles, highlighted by Bivert''s two-run single. Sacramento State added another run in the third on Bivert''s solo home run.

Santa Clara immediately responded with three runs in the top of the fourth as Jessica Clee opened the frame with a single, and was brought home by Tracie Hall''s triple. Hall later scored on Shannon Linerud''s single, and the Broncos tied the game after pinch hitter Kelley Johnson''s infield single brought home Linerud. Santa Clara added single runs in the fifth and seventh innings on a Linerud RBI-double and a Salas RBI-double, respectively.

Sacramento State had the tying runners at second and third base in the seventh inning, but Forman-Lau got Bivert to ground out to shortstop to end the game. Sophomore Brianne Ferguson (12-12) got the loss, allowing five runs and 12 hits in seven innings. After giving up three runs and five hits through the first three innings, Forman-Lau allowed no runs and four hits over the final four innings.

The Hornets conclude the 2003 regular season next weekend as the team hosts San Diego for a four-game PCSC series. The teams play doubleheaders on Saturday, May 3, and Sunday, May 4, at noon. Prior to Sunday''s doubleheader, Sacramento State seniors Bivert and Gina Steenburgen will be honored for their contributions to the program.
