SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State scored three runs in the sixth inning and held on for a 3-2 victory over Loyola Marymount in the second game of a Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium. Danielle Kaminaka and Sami Strinz each had two RBIs in the first game to lead the Lions to a 4-3 victory. With today''s doubleheader split, Loyola Marymount, which swept two games from Sacramento State yesterday, takes over sole possession of first place in the PCSC standings. The Lions (27-17, 9-3 PCSC) had their program-record 11-game winning streak snapped with the loss in game two. Sacramento State is now 28-22 overall and 7-5 in the conference. Eight games remain on the schedule for Sacramento State as it travels to Santa Clara for a four-game series next weekend (April 26-27) and hosts San Diego for four games on May 3-4.
In the second game, the Hornets broke a scoreless tie with three sixth-inning runs on RBI-grounders from sophomores Erin Coyne and Amy Hillel, and an RBI-single from freshman Britany Crine. All three runs were unearned as the Hornets took advantage of an error by Lions'' second baseman Casie Phillips to open the inning.
Loyola Marymount responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI-fielders choice off the bat of Strinz and an RBI-double from Emily Foltz. Loyola Marymount had an opportunity to score more in the inning with runners at second and third and one out, but Hornet starter Brianne Ferguson retired Jessica Grassi and Brittany Bassett to preserve the 3-2 lead.
Ferguson (11-11) picked up the win, allowing two runs and five hits while striking out five in seven innings. The right-hander retired eight batters in a row at one point during the game and allowed just two walks. Krystal Kehr (12-7) got the loss, allowing three unearned runs and four hits in five innings. Both teams recorded just five hits as no player tallied more than one hit.
In the first game, Strinz''s two-run double in the third inning and Danielle Kaminaka''s two-run homer in the fifth proved to be too much for the Hornets. Kaminaka''s shot was her team-best 10th home run of the season. Sacramento State had tied the game at 2-2 on a throwing error in the top of the fifth prior to Kaminaka''s blast (per conference rules, Loyola Marymount was the designated home team in both games of today''s doubleheader).
The Hornets cut the deficit to one run (4-3) in the sixth after Lesley Mayhorn''s ground ball scored pinch runner Stephanie Lockhart. Sacramento State had potential tying run on third base but Strinz retired Crine to end the inning.
Samantha Lavino (9-5) picked up her second win in as many days, allowing three runs (two earned) and nine hits in five innings. Strinz worked a perfect two innings of relief to pick up her second save of the series. Junior Nicole Deatherage (13-9) got the loss, allowing four hits and four runs in six innings. The right-hander struck out eight batters, tying her third-best mark of the season.
Sacramento State freshman Lindy Winkler failed to get a hit in both games, snapping her team-high tying seven-game hitting streak. Winkler opened the year with a seven-game hitting streak as well.
Ferguson was inserted into the lineup offensively in the second game and picked up her first hit of the season (single) in the third inning.
