SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State junior Nicole Deatherage was named Pacific Coast Softball Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season after posting a 2-1 record and a 1.46 ERA last week.In three appearances, the Cameron Park, Calif., native limited the opposition to a .213 batting average and struck out 17 batters in 24.0 innings. She posted a 2-0 record and a 0.82 ERA against conference-foe Portland State over the weekend, including a nine-inning shutout on Sunday.
Deatherage’s only blemish of the week was a loss to sixth-ranked Cal where she allowed three earned runs and seven hits in seven innings. On Sunday, she allowed just one runner past second base during the entire game while scattering six hits over nine innings. On Saturday, she picked up another extra-inning victory, allowing three runs (two earned) while striking out eight in eight innings.
Deatherage has now won five of her last six decisions while improving her record to a team-best 13-7. Her 13 wins already rank as the 10th-best single-season mark in Sacramento State’s Div. I history (1990-pres.). She has gone the distance in each of her last 10 starts and has 16 complete games in 21 starts this season.
In addition, Deatherage, who combined to go 17-25 during her first two years with the program, has a career-high 116 strikeouts in 144.2 innings this year. She has struck out at least two batters in every appearance and is averaging 5.9 strikeouts per game over her last nine starts.
Sacramento State (27-19, 6-2 PCSC) returns to action this week as the team hosts Loyola Marymount for a four-game series. The teams will play doubleheaders on Friday, April 18 (1 p.m.) and Saturday, April 19 (noon). Sacramento State and Loyola Marymount, who were selected as co-favorites to win the conference in the preseason coaches poll, are currently tied atop the PCSC standings.
