SIXTH-RANKED CAL SWEEPS TWO FROM SOFTBALL

4/9/2003

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Cal''s Courtney Scott combined to go 5-for-8 with four doubles, three runs and two RBIs to lead the sixth-ranked Bears to a non-conference softball doubleheader sweep of Sacramento State Wednesday afternoon at Shea Stadium. Cal won the first game, 7-1, before taking the second game, 4-1.

Cal''s starting pitchers Jen Deering and Cassie Bobrow each allowed one run in six innings while the Bears improved their record to 34-9. The defending national champions combined for 11 runs and 17 hits in both games. Sacramento State had its five-game winning streak snapped while falling to 25-17. The Hornets are now 2-12 against teams ranked in the top 25 or receiving votes.

In the first game, Sacramento State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-out, RBI-double from sophomore Erin Coyne. The Hornets then loaded the bases, but Deering got Amber Dragomir to ground out to end the inning.

Cal tied the game in the second on an RBI-single from Chelsea Spencer. The game remained tied, 1-1, through four innings until the Bears broke it open with two runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth. The first five Bears to bat in the fifth inning reached base safely, culminating in RBI-singles from Kaleo Eldredge and Eryn Manahan. Cal scored four more in the sixth inning, highlighted by an RBI-double from Scott.

Deering (7-1) went the first six innings for the win, allowing one run and two hits. Sophomore Brianne Ferguson (10-8) picked up the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) and nine hits in five innings. All eight of Ferguson''s losses this season have come against opponents ranked in the top 25 or receiving votes. Against all other teams, the right-hander is 10-0.

In the second game, Sacramento State outhit Cal, 8-7, but stranded seven runners on base. Cal got on the board in the first inning on an RBI-double from Scott. The big blow of the game came in the fourth inning on a three-run home run from Manahan. After the home run, Deatherage retired 11 of the final 13 batters she faced.

Manahan combined for two hits and five RBIs during the doubleheader.

The Hornets scored their only run in the sixth inning after Deatherage singled home Amy Walter. Sacramento State left at least one runner on base in every inning but the fifth. Freshman Lindy Winkler, junior Amanda Moreland and Deatherage each had two hits for the Hornets. Moreland had her five-game hitting streak snapped after going 0-for-2 with a walk in the first game.

Bobrow (3-0) got the win for Cal, allowing one run and eight hits in six innings. Kristina Thorson pitched the seventh inning to record her first save of the season. Deatherage (11-7) lost for the first time since March 23, allowing seven hits and four runs (three earned) in seven innings.

Sacramento State returns to action this weekend (April 12-13) for a four-game series at Portland State. The Hornets and Vikings play doubleheaders on both days at noon.
