SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State junior Amy Walter was named Pacific Coast Softball Conference (PCSC) Player of the Week after leading the Hornets to a 5-1 record last week, including a victory over 13th-ranked Stanford.In six games, Walter hit a team-best .583 (7-12) with four runs, four walks, four sacrifices, two doubles, a triple, one stolen base and four RBIs. Walter reached base safely in all but one game while tallying a .688 on-base percentage and a .917 slugging percentage.
In addition, the Watsonville, Calif., native hit 1.000 (5-5) with runners in scoring position, 1.000 (4-4) with two outs and .833 (5-6) with runners on base. Her four sacrifices during the week pushed her season total to 23, a new Sacramento State single-season record.
In the victory against Stanford, Walter had two hits, including a two-out, RBI-single in the sixth inning that proved to be the game-winning run. She has now hit safely in seven of her last nine games while improving her season batting average to a season-best .303.
Walter, who transferred to Sacramento State after spending her first two seasons at San Jose State, is one of three Hornets to start all 40 games this season. The honor marks her second career player of the week award as she was named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week in 2001 while playing for the Spartans.
As a team, Sacramento State has now received six PCSC Player/Pitcher of the Week awards this season, including three player awards (Walter, freshman Lindy Winkler and sophomore Erin Coyne) and three pitcher awards (sophomore Brianne Ferguson twice and junior Nicole Deatherage).
Sacramento State (25-15, 4-0 PCSC) hosts defending national champion and seventh-ranked Cal this Wednesday, April 9, for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. The Hornets jump back into conference play this weekend with a four-game series at Portland State.
