LATE-INNING RALLY PROPELS SOFTBALL TO SPLIT WITH 13TH-RANKED STANFORD

4/2/2003

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State''s two-out, three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning propelled the Hornets to a 6-5 victory over 13th-ranked Stanford in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The Cardinal won the first game, 5-1.

With the split, Sacramento State defeated Stanford for the first time since 1999, a span of seven-consecutive losses to the Cardinal. The Hornets improved to 21-15 while Stanford dropped to 27-12. The victory also marked the Hornets'' second of the season against an opponent ranked in the top 25 as the team defeated Kansas (ranked 23rd).

With two outs and the Hornets trailing, 4-3, in the sixth inning of the second game, Sacramento State mounted a rally that would eventually see the team score three runs. Freshmen Britany Crine and Whitnie Darvell got things going with back-to-back singles. Freshman Lindy Winkler then followed with her team-leading seventh triple of the season scoring both pinch runner Stephanie Lockhart and Darvell with the go-ahead run. Junior Amy Walter then singled in Winkler to give the Hornets a 6-4 lead heading into the seventh.

Walter''s RBI-single proved to the game-winning hit as Lauren Lappin''s one-out, home run in the top of the seventh narrowed the Hornets'' lead to 6-5. Cassi Brangham followed Lappin''s shot with a double before Sacramento State pitcher Nicole Deatherage retired Kira Ching and Jessica Allister to end the contest.

Winkler finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, while Walter added a pair of hits. Deatherage (9-6) went the distance for the win, allowing five runs and 10 hits in seven innings. The Hornets erased a 3-0 deficit with three runs in the third inning on a Deatherage two-run double and a sacrifice fly from Erin Coyne.

Tori Nyberg (12-6) picked up the loss for Stanford, allowing six runs (four earned) and nine hits in 5.2 innings. Allister had a two-run homer in the second inning, staking the Cardinal to a 2-0 lead.

In the first game, Stanford pounded out five runs and 11 hits while Cardinal starter Dana Sorensen limited Sacramento State to just one unearned run and three hits in six innings of work.

The Cardinal scored in the first, fifth, sixth and seventh innings as Catalina Morris (2-for-3) and Brangham (3-for-4) combined for five hits, two runs and two RBIs. Stanford put at least two runners on base in every inning but the fourth as the team stranded nine runners during the game.

Sophomore Brianne Ferguson (8-7) picked up the loss for the Hornets, allowing five runs (four earned) and 11 hits in seven innings. Sacramento State committed four errors in the seventh inning leading to a Cardinal run.

Walter, Amy Hillel and Amber Dragomir were the only Hornets to pick up hits in the contest.

Sacramento State continues its eight-game homestand this weekend as the team opens up Pacific Coast Softball Conference play against Saint Mary''s. The teams will play doubleheaders on both Saturday (April 5) and Sunday (April 6) with games starting at noon each day.
