SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State softball program announced today that Lindy Winkler has signed a National Letter of Intent and will enroll as a freshman at Sacramento State in the fall of 2002.Winkler, a 5-7 native of San Andreas, Calif., is currently in her fourth season with Calaveras High School. A four-time first team all-Mother Lode League selection, Winkler has led Calaveras to a 22-8 overall record and a 10-2 league mark as the Redskins will play in the Sac-Joaquin Div. III section playoffs this weekend.
This season, Winkler was named the Mother Lode League’s Most Outstanding Player and team MVP after hitting .600 (48-80) with 22 RBIs, 15 stolen bases and 30 runs scored. Eleven (six doubles and five triples) of her 48 hits went for extra bases. Winkler, who will play in the outfield with the Hornets according to Sacramento State head coach Kathy Strahan, was also a first team all-league selection in basketball and volleyball during her senior season.
A left-handed slap hitter, Winkler also played five years as a center fielder with the California Grapettes’ club team. She plays both shortstop and pitcher for Calaveras High School.
“Lindy will bring a ton of speed and offense, and she’ll help us with increased run production,” Strahan said. “She has excellent speed in the outfield, and has the ability to not only bunt and slap hit, but she could hit for power as well.
“She’ll be a big impact for us as a freshman and we’re very excited to have her join the program.”
Winkler marks the sixth Sacramento State softball signee of the year, joining Britany Crine (Canyon High School), Stephanie Lockhart (American River JC), Amanda Moreland (American River JC), Joanna O’Neill (Sheldon High School) and Amy Walter (San Jose State). Crine, Lockhart and Moreland were inked during the early signing period.
