SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Meghan Cunningham, an infielder on the Sacramento State softball team, was among 11 female student-athletes representing 10 NCAA Division I institutions selected to the 2002 Verizon Softball Academic All-American second team for District VIII, it was announced Thursday.Cunningham, who owns a 3.74 gpa as a kinesiology major, has started 40 games this season at first and third base. The Orangevale, Calif., native is currently hitting .257 with a .336 on-base percentage and a team-leading six stolen bases. Also among team leaders, she is tied for first in multiple-RBI games (three), second in fielding percentage (.977), tied for third in doubles (three) and walks (11), and tied for fourth in runs scored (11).
Cunningham, who was selected to the Academic All-American District VIII team in 2000, has been named to the Dean''s List all seven semesters at Sacramento State and is on pace to graduate in two weeks. She tied her career high with a six-game hitting streak earlier this season and has committed just one error in the last 25 games.
To be eligible for the honor, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 gpa (on a 4.0 scale), must be a starter or an important reserve, and be in at least their second season with the current school.
Ten student-athletes were selected to the first team and 11 were selected to the second team.
Sacramento State (16-32 overall) concludes the 2002 season this Friday-Saturday, May 10-11, as it welcomes UC Santa Barbara for a three-game Big West Conference series. The teams play a doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m., and a single game Saturday at noon.
