BALL'S TWO-HITTER SPARKS PACIFIC TO VICTORY OVER SOFTBALL

4/18/2002

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Barbara Moody finished with three hits and two RBIs and Cindy Ball tossed a two-hit shutout to lead Pacific to a 2-0 victory over Sacramento State in a Big West Conference game Thursday afternoon at Shea Stadium. Today''s game was a makeup for a contest that was rained out on March 24.

Pacific improved to 34-12 overall and 14-1 in the Big West while Sacramento State dropped to 15-22 and 4-8 in the conference.

Ball carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before a two-out Alison Norman base hit broke it up. Senior Meghan Cunningham added a single in the seventh inning for the Hornets'' only two hits of the game. Ball (21-8) faced just four batters over the minimum while striking out one and walking two.

Moody finished 3-for-4, including RBI-doubles in the third and fifth innings. Moody now has 25 doubles this season, which breaks the Big West single-season record and currently leads the nation. Michelle Anunciation and Aloha Yamaguchi each finished with two hits for Pacific.

The Hornets never threatened until the seventh inning when they got runners at second and third with two outs before Ball induced Cathy Coupar to fly out. Norman''s sixth-inning single extended her hitting streak to six games.

Sophomore Nicole Deatherage (8-5) picked up the loss for the Hornets, allowing two runs and eight hits in seven innings of work. Deatherage allowed at least one hit in every inning but the fourth.

Sacramento State returns to action this weekend as it hosts a three-game series against Long Beach State. The Hornets and 49ers play a doubleheader Saturday, April 20, at noon, and a single game Sunday, April 21, at noon.
