3/15/2013

Caitlin Brooks took the loss today despite allowing just one run and two hits over seven innings

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Texas State’s Rayn House tossed a three-hit shutout to help lead the Bobcats to a 1-0 victory over Sacramento State in the first round of the Capital Classic Softball Tournament Friday afternoon at Shea Stadium.

The Hornets, who entered today as winners of seven of their last eight games, dropped to 12-7 overall and 0-1 at the tournament. Over the last eight contests, Sacramento State had averaged 5.3 runs and 9.5 hits per game until getting blanked today.

In other tournament games on Friday, Fresno State beat Kansas, 3-2, and later in the day, Kansas knocked off Saint Mary’s, 3-1. The Hornets will play twice more tomorrow against Saint Mary’s at 1 p.m., and Fresno State at 3 p.m. Other tournament games on Saturday include Kansas vs. Texas State at 9 a.m., and Fresno State vs. Texas State at 11 a.m.

House threw 110 pitches, and never allowed a Sacramento State runner past second base. The Hornets did hit the ball hard on occasions, but were victimized by five line-drive outs. House faced just five batters over the minimum while improving to 2-8.

Sacramento State starter Caitlin Brooks (7-2) was just as effective, allowing just two hits and one run while walking two and striking out six over seven innings. Brooks had won five straight starts until taking the loss today.

Texas State (5-19) got the only run of the game in the fourth inning when Haley Lemons deposited a 3-2 pitch over the right field fence. The Bobcats did not get a hit the rest of the game as Brooks set down 12 of the final 13 batters she faced, including the nine batters in a row over the final three innings.

Sacramento State had a runner at second base with one out in both the fifth and seventh innings, but could not score. The Hornets finished the day 0-for-7 with runners on base, and 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.

No players from either team had more than one hit, as Sacramento State received hits from Kelli FryeKayla Papez and Alyssa Vanderdrink.
