BROOKS RECEIVES BIG SKY CONFERENCE’S FIRST-EVER PITCHER OF THE WEEK AWARD
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State sophomore Caitlin Brooks was named the Big Sky Conference’s Softball Pitcher of the Week today after helping lead the Hornets to a 3-2 record at last week’s season-opening Fresno State Kickoff.
The Big Sky Conference began sponsoring softball this year, and today’s player and pitcher of the weeks awards are the first ever given out by the league.
Brooks earned complete-game victories in both her starts last week, posting a 2-0 record with a 0.50 ERA. In 14.0 innings, she allowed just 12 hits, one earned run and struck out 16 batters. Of those 12 hits, only one went for extra bases and opponents combined to hit just .235 off the right-hander. Her nine strikeouts against UTEP were a career high, and she followed that effort two days later with seven more strikeouts against archrival UC Davis.
In the Hornets’ 2-1 win on Sunday over UC Davis, the Escalon, Calif., native allowed just four hits and one run while walking two batters. In fact, she allowed just one hit through the first six innings of the game, before working her way out of a jam in the seventh.
In the 3-2 win in Friday’s season opener against UTEP, Brooks scattered eight hits while allowing two unearned runs and walking three batters over seven innings. That included retiring three straight batters in the seventh after the first two batters of the inning had reached base safely.
Thus far, opponents are hitting just .188 (3-for-16) off Brooks with two outs in an inning.
The Hornets return to action later today for the team’s home opener against Pacific at 2:30 p.m. Sacramento State will also travel to Saint Mary’s later in the week for a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
