SHEA GRAVES NAMED THE BIG SKY SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State true freshman Shea Graves was named the Big Sky Conference Softball Player of the Week after helping the Hornets to a 4-1 record last week. That included a win over 24th-ranked Stanford, and a three-game sweep of Montana.

Graves, who started all five games at shortstop, hit .444 (8-for-18) with six runs scored, two doubles, two home runs and seven RBIs. She hit safely in all five games, scored at least one run in all five games, and had at least two RBIs in three games. Graves also added one extra base hit in four of the five games.

In the Hornets' opener against Stanford, which the Hornets lost by an 8-7 score, Graves went 2-for-4 with a run scored, home run and two RBIs. She would also homer in the 5-2 nightcap win against the Cardinal when she finished 2-for-3 with two runs, a homer, sacrifice and two RBIs. The victory over Stanford marked the Hornets' first win over a nationally ranked opponent since March 24, 2009.

The Palmdale, Calif., native continued her torrid pace in the first game against Montana (9-1 win) when she went 2-for-4 with a run scored. In the second-game win over the Griz, which ended in an 8-5 victory in 10 innings, Graves was 1-for-4 with a run, double, sacrifice fly and RBI. She followed up that effort in another 10-inning win in the third game of the series by going 1-for-3 with a run scored, double, sacrifice and two RBIs.

Graves has now raised her batting average to .305 and is currently riding a five-game hitting streak. In conference play, Graves is hitting .360 with eight runs scored in eight games.

She has started 36 games as a true freshman, including 31 starts at shortstop, three at second base and two at designated player.

Sacramento State (21-17, 5-3 Big Sky) returns to action on Wednesday when the team plays a non-conference doubleheader at Fresno State at 4:30 p.m.
