SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State sixth-year softball head coach Lori Perez announced the signing of three high school seniors to National Letters of Intent today, and each will enroll at the University as freshmen next fall.
The signees are comprised of Golden Valley High School pitcher/outfielder Marissa Bertuccio, Armijo High School third baseman/outfielder Lewa Day and Everett Alvarez High School outfielder Aliyah Robles.
"We are excited about the impact these players will have on our program," Perez said. "Their athletic accomplishments are one part of who they are as people. They are also great teammates and students."
Bertuccio, a 5-foot-8 pitcher/outfielder from Merced, Calif., will enter her fourth season with the varsity team at Golden Valley High School in Merced, Calif…through three seasons, the right-hander is a combined 30-10 with a 0.79 ERA and 604 strikeouts in 432.2 innings pitched…also has a career .444 batting average with 78 runs, 27 stolen bases and 50 RBIs in 79 games played…is a three-time first team all-Central California Conference selection, a three-time all-area choice and three-time team MVP…had a monster junior season that saw her earn Central California Conference Pitcher of the Year accolades as well as being named the Merced Sun-Star Softball Player of the Year and second team all-section…during that junior season, she led the Cougars to their first postseason appearance since 2006 while going 21-6 with a 0.64 ERA…threw five no-hitters and two perfect games…her 21 wins and 267 strikeouts both ranked ninth in the state…led the conference in strikeouts, ERA and no-hitters…hit .453 in the middle of the batting order…played three years of travel ball for the Batbusters organization, coached by Dennis Gomes.
Perez quote: "Marissa will make an impact right away. She has incredible spin and movement on her pitches which will fool hitters at our level. She is a work horse on the mound, and will only grow stronger in our system. She is an athletic pitcher, who not only fields well off the mound, but is versatile and can play multiple positions."
Day, a 5-foot-5 third baseman/outfielder from Fairfield, Calif., will enter her fourth season with the varsity team at Armijo High School in Fairfield…a three-year starter for the Indians…through three seasons (63 games), she has a career .471 batting average (81-for-172) with 61 runs scored, 19 home runs, 82 RBIs, a .566 on-base percentage, .947 slugging percentage and a 1.514 ops…was named the Monticello Empire League MVP last season after batting .500 in 15 league games with five homers, 23 RBIs, 25 intentional walks, a .712 on-base percentage and a 1.771 ops…named team MVP each of the last two seasons…as a freshman, Day led the MEL in home runs and RBIs in league play…during that freshman season, she had seven homers and 34 RBIs in 22 games…played from 2016-18 for the NorCal Firecrackers organization, coached by Michael Thomas…helped the team to a 2018 Premier Girls Fastpitch national championship in the 18-under Platinum division…10 of her teammates with the Firecrackers have signed with teams to play collegiate softball.

Robles, a 5-foot outfielder from Salinas, Calif., will enter her fourth season of varsity softball for Everett Alvarez High School in Salinas, Calif…has been a starting outfielder every season for the Eagles…an all-league selection all three years of her career thus far…helped the Eagles to a three-year combined record of 57-23 overall and 29-7 in league…the team has finished first or second all three years, including a Monterey Bay - Pacific League co-championship last year when the team finished 19-8 overall and 10-2 in league…as a junior, she led all Monterey Bay leagues with 41 hits and ranked third with 30 RBIs…that season, she hit .644 with seven home runs, 15 multiple-hit games, a .682 on-base percentage, a 1.205 slugging percentage and a 1.887 ops…competed one season of track and field (2016), where she posted the eighth fastest 100-meter time in school history…played club ball for the California Suncats, coached by James Jimenez…five of her teammates from the Suncats signed with collegiate teams to play Div. I softball.
Perez quote: "Aliyah brings a lot of tools to the table. She is fast, has an extremely strong and accurate arm, will hit for average and has the power to drive the ball out of the park. She has incredible range in the outfield, is tough minded and will compete on every pitch."
Last season, Sacramento State won both the Big Sky Conference regular season and tournament championships, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2008. The Hornets finished with a 31-20 overall record and a 14-7 mark in league play. The team opens the 2019 season by hosting the NorCal Kickoff from Feb. 8-10.
