Big Sky Tournament Central
OGDEN, Utah — Due to steady rain in the Ogden area, Sacramento State's Big Sky Conference Tournament winner's bracket game vs. Northern Colorado, originally scheduled for this afternoon, has been postponed. The two teams are now scheduled to play Saturday morning at 8 a.m. PDT.
Four games were scheduled for today, but rain changed that schedule completely. Now, only two games will play today at the six-team, double elimination tournament, and both are loser's bracket games. North Dakota and Montana will attempt to play this afternoon, followed by Portland State vs. tournamet host Weber State. There are no lights at Weber State's field.
Sacramento State and Northern Colorado are the lone teams at the tournament that have yet to lose. Northern Colorado, which is the No. 6 seed, defeated both North Dakota and host Weber State yesterday. Sacramento State, which received a first round bye by virtue of winning the regular season championship and assuming the 1 seed, defeated Montana in its only game yesterday.
Rain is in the forecast for tomorrow morning as well, putting the scheduled 8 a.m. start time in jeopardy. Rain is supposed to let up by the early afternoon, and it appears more likely Sacramento State's game will start later than the 8 a.m. time.
Big Sky rules stipulate that if the tournament does not get played in its entirety, the highest remaining seed in the winner's bracket would get the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. The Hornets are the No. 1 seed and are currently in the winner's bracket.
Seeds for the tournament are as follows: No. 1 Sacramento State, No. 2 Weber State, No. 3 North Dakota, No. 4 Portland State, No. 5 Montana and No. 6 Northern Colorado. Weber State, North Dakota, Portland State and Montana have already lost one game.
The winner of tomorrow's Sacramento State-Northern Colorado matchup will advance to the championship game at a date and time to be determined. There is the possibility games could be played Sunday morning.
The selection show for the NCAA Softball Tournament is set for Sunday night at 7 p.m. PDT on ESPN2.
