SOFTBALL SIGNS ALL-STATE PITCHER TAYLOR TESSIER

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State head softball coach Lori Perez announced today that Cabrillo College pitcher Taylor Tessier has signed to play with the Hornets, and will enroll at the University this fall. Tessier will have two years of eligibility with the Hornets after playing her freshman and sophomore seasons at Cabrillo.

Including the six high school seniors that signed in November, the Hornets' 2016 recruiting class consists of two outfielders, two pitchers, a catcher, a shortstop and a designated player/pitcher.

Tessier, a 5-foot-7 right-hander from Santa Cruz, Calif., starred for two seasons at Cabrillo, a community college in Aptos, Calif. Last season, as a sophomore, Tessier helped lead the Seahawks to a 32-14 record and an appearance in the California Community College Athletic Association Regional Playoffs. Tessier was named first team all-state, the Coast Conference South Pitcher of the Year and first team all-league after going 21-12 with a 1.32 ERA, including 279 strikeouts in 196.1 innings of work. The strikeouts were the second best mark in the state (and tops in Northern California) among all community college pitchers and the ERA was the fourth best mark.

She averaged 9.9 strikeouts per seven innings, had a 6.3-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and appeared in 36 of the team's 46 games. Tessier allowed just 10 extra base hits all season, and had 12 games where she struck out at least 10 batters. That includes a perfect game in a 9-0 five-inning victory against Barstow College in which Tessier struck out 14 of the 15 batters she faced.

"I'm excited to have Taylor join our pitching staff for the upcoming season," Perez said. "She is very competitive, hard working and driven. Her pitching game will help balance our staff and provide us with another weapon in the circle to attack opposing teams."

Tessier was also a first team all-conference selection as a freshman after helping Cabrillo to a 26-13 record. That season, she was 15-7 with a 2.79 ERA, which included 171 strikeouts and just 26 walks in 153.0 innings.

During her two-year career at Cabrillo, Tessier went 36-19 with a 1.96 ERA, struck out 450 batters in 349.1 innings, and posted a 6.4-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio (450 strikeouts, 70 walks).

Tessier prepped at Soquel High School in the Santa Cruz area where she pitched during her freshman and sophomore seasons, but did not play as a junior or senior.

Tessier joins a Sacramento State program that finished the 2015 season with a 28-26 overall record and a 15-6 mark in the Big Sky Conference. The Hornets eliminated a pair of teams from the Big Sky Tournament before falling in the championship game and narrowly missing out on an automatic berth into the NCAA Regionals.
