European Championship schedule and stats

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State catcher Nikki Gialketsis, who will enter her sophomore season with the Hornets in 2015, recently helped lead Greece to a bronze medal at the European Championship Softball Under-22 Tournament in Dupnitsa, Bulgaria.

Greece was among seven teams at the tournament that included Russia, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Slovakia and Poland. The tournament featured seven games over six days from July 7-12.

Gialketsis played catcher and batted leadoff for Greece in all seven games while leading the team in virtually every statistical category. The Manhattan Beach, Calif., native hit .455 (10-for-22) with four runs, a double, triple, six RBIs, a .520 on-base percentage and .591 slugging percentage. That included a walk-off RBI-single in the bottom of the ninth inning in Greece's 3-2 victory over Slovakia.

Among tournament leaders, she was tied for third in hits, fourth in on-base percentage, sixth in batting average, tied for sixth in RBIs, tied for seventh in total bases and eighth in slugging percentage.

Greece finished the tournament with a 4-3 record, and assured itself of a medal with its 9-2 win over Bulgaria in the semifinals.

Gialketsis is the second Hornet to enjoy recent success on the professional level overseas. Sasha Margulies, who will be a junior next season for Sacramento State, represented the United States at the Prague Softball Tournament in the Czech Republic earlier this month. In six games, Margulies hit .650 (13-for-20) with 13 runs, three doubles, two triples, a home run, nine RBIs and a 1.150 slugging percentage.

Both Margulies and Gialketsis hit for high averages with the Hornets last season and were honorable mention all-Big Sky Conference selections.
