PRAGUE, Czech Republic -- Sacramento State sophomore first baseman Sasha Margulies was selected to represent the United States at the annual Prague Softball Tournament in the Czech Republic.
The tournament began yesterday and concludes on July 1. Margulies is currently participating as part of USA Athletes International (USAAI), a non-profit organization that creates international competitions for amateur athletes throughout the world. The USAAI team is competing in the tournament against Junior National teams from the Czech Republic, Croatia, Sweden, Germany, Austria and Poland.
The USAAI team will play at least six games during the tournament. Athletes for the team are selected based on the recommendations of coaches, athletes and athletics professionals.
In her first season with the Hornets in 2014 after transferring from Ball State, Margulies was an honorable mention all-Big Sky Conference selection and named Sacramento State's Female Newcomer of the Year after hitting a team-high .349 (44-for-126) with nine doubles, a triple, home run and 24 RBIs. In 45 games, the San Diego native also had a .443 on-base percentage and a .903 ops while ranking among the top two Hornets in batting average, walks (20), hits (46), doubles (9), slugging percentage (.460) and on-base percentage.
She shredded Big Sky Conference pitching to the tune of a .381 batting average, .548 slugging percentage, .536 on-base percentage and a 1.084 ops. In conference games, she ranked first in the Big Sky in walks (14) and fourth in on-base percentage. Margulies had an 11-game hitting streak from March 15-April 11, tied for the seventh longest in Sacramento State's Div. I era (1990-pres.).
