LEADING 9-2 OVER BOISE STATE, UNLUCKY SOFTBALL SEES RAIN CANCEL THE GAME
MORAGA, Calif. -- Leading, 9-2, over Boise State in the bottom of the second inning, the Sacramento State softball squad had its game cancelled after heavy rains made Cottrell Field unplayable. The game will not be made up and the stats accumulated by both teams will not count. A game is not official until it goes five innings.
In addition, the Hornets' scheduled game later this afternoon against Saint Mary's has been cancelled. The games were part of the two-day Gael Classic in which Sacramento State played twice yesterday. That included a 3-1 victory over Boise State and a 4-2 loss to host Saint Mary's.
In today's abbreviated game, the Hornets struck for four runs in the top of the first and posted five more in the second. Six different Hornets scored at least one run, including two apiece from Kortney Solis, Sasha Margulies and Paige Martin. Yesenia Alcala and Martin both had a pair of RBIs, and Solis and Alexis Martinez also had an RBI. However, none of those stats will count towards the team's season statistics.
Sacramento State (6-6) will now turn its attention to Tuesday, March 4, when the team will finally play its home opener against UC Davis at 1:30 p.m. The Hornets will also play in the three-day Mustang Classic later in the week in San Luis Obispo.
