SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State softball head coach announced the signing of a pair of high school seniors to National Letters of Intent today, and both will enroll as freshmen next fall.
The signees are comprised of catcher/outfielder Nikki Gialketsis of Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, and outfielder Shelby Johnston of Inglemoor High School in Kenmore, Wash.
Gialketsis, a 5-foot-4 catcher/outfielder, will enter her fourth season with the varsity squad at Manhattan Beach's Mira Costa High School. She helped lead the Mustangs to a combined 46-15-1 overall record and a 16-4 league mark over the last two seasons, which includes a Bay League championship in 2011. Last season, the Manhattan Beach, Calif., native hit .478 (44-for-92) with eight doubles, three home runs, 36 runs and 37 RBIs in 31 games. She also had three hitting streaks of at least six games, a .515 on-base percentage and a 1.000 fielding percentage in 48 chances in the field. As a junior in 2011, Gialketsis batted .367 (29-for-79) with 17 RBIs in 30 games. For her career, she has committed just two errors, and has been named the team's player of the week on four occasions. She has played for Orange County's So Cal Strikkers the last four years, and three of her teammates have committed to play at Div. I institutions.
"Nikki is a highly-driven individual with the athleticism to play both catcher and in the outfield," Strahan said. "Offensively, she is a good contact hitter with the ability to hit the long ball."
Johnston, a 5-foot-4 outfielder, will enter her fourth season with the varsity squad at Kenmore's Inglemoor High School. The Kenmore, Wash., native has started in the outfield each year of her career, and this season will mark the third straight as the team's center fielder (she started in left as a freshman). A three-time 4A KingCo all-conference selection, Johnston was selected as the league MVP last season for an Inglemoor squad that reached the Class 4A state tournament. She was also named first team all-league as sophomore and second team as a freshman. She has hit .356 or better all three years of her career, including .506 last season with a .542 on-base percentage, 29 runs, eight doubles, three home runs and 17 RBIs. For her career, she is hitting .412 (94-for-228). Johnston also helped the Vikings to a conference championship and a third-place finish in the state tournament in 2010. She has played for Puyallup's Washington LadyHawks each of the last two years.
"Defensively, Shelby has a lot of experience as a center fielder on a highly competitive club team," Strahan said. "She has a strong arm and the ability to throw out runners at home plate. Offensively, I look for her to contribute as a power hitter with RBI capability and someone who will hit for average."
