Sacramento State scored four times in the sixth inning, but the team’s comeback bid fell just short in a 5-4 loss to Southern Utah in the second round of the Big Sky Softball Championship Friday afternoon at Miller Ranch Stadium.

SOFTBALL FALLS IN DRAMATIC FASHION, 10-9, TO IDAHO STATE IN FIRST ROUND OF BIG SKY TOURNEY
In a game that featured four lead changes, 19 runs, 29 hits, 15 extra base hits, and an hour and 26 minute rain delay, it was a Hailey Breakwell walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning that gave Idaho State a 10-9 victory over Sacramento State in the first round of the Big Sky Conference Softball Championship Friday afternoon.

Sophomore Caitlin Brooks threw a two-hit shutout with no walks and a career-high 12 strikeouts to lead Sacramento State to a 2-0 victory over Idaho State in the first game of a Big Sky Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium. Idaho State scored seven unearned runs in the nightcap to defeat the Hornets, 11-6.

The Sacramento State softball team (21-18, 6-6) will play its final three games of the regular season this weekend at home against Idaho State (26-20, 12-3). The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by a single game on Sunday at noon. All three games will be played at Shea Stadium on the Sacramento State campus.

SOFTBALL’S THREE-GAME SERIES AT NORTH DAKOTA CANCELED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER
The Big Sky Conference, in consultation with the University of North Dakota and Sacramento State athletic administrators, has cancelled the three-game softball series between the schools scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 19-20 in Grand Forks, N.D. According to Conference bylaws, the games will not be rescheduled.

Sophomore Caitlin Brooks tossed a one-hit shutout to lead Sacramento State to a 3-0 win over Weber State in the first game of a Big Sky Conference softball doubleheader Friday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The second game, which turned out to be a marathon, was stopped in the middle of the 15th inning because of darkness and will be resumed tomorrow at noon.

The game was called after five innings because Sacramento State had an eight-run lead.

Junior right-hander Taylor Stroud threw a six-hit shutout in the first game of today’s doubleheader to highlight Sacramento State’s split with Nevada in a non-conference softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The Hornets won the first game, 1-0, before the Wolf Pack came back to win the nightcap by a 5-1 score.

Sacramento State sophomore pitcher Caitlin Brooks and Cal senior pitcher Jolene Henderson combined to allow just four hits while striking out 25 batters in an epic pitchers duel that was eventually won by the fifth-ranked Bears, 1-0, in a front of a record crowd of 1,212 Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium.

Freshman right-hander Jennifer Hartman allowed just three hits and one run over seven innings to lead Sacramento State to a 2-1 victory over Northern Colorado in the nightcap of a Big Sky Conference softball doubleheader Friday afternoon at Shea Stadium. Northern Colorado was victorious in the first game by a 6-3 score.

For the first time ever, Sacramento State (14-8) will play a Big Sky Conference game when the team hosts Northern Colorado (9-18-1) for a three-game series. The Hornets will play the Bears in a doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m., followed by a single game on Saturday at noon. All three games will take place at Shea Stadium on campus.

Sacramento State sophomores Caitlin Brooks and Paige Martin were named the Big Sky Conference’s Softball Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively, it was announced today by the league. Sacramento State went 4-1 at last week’s Mustang Classic in San Luis Obispo, and both Brooks and Martin played large roles in the team’s success.

Sacramento State (8-5) travels to San Luis Obispo, Calif., this week to compete in the Mustang Classic for the fourth time in six years. Each of the five teams at the tournament will play five games over three days (March 8-10), and the Hornets will play twice on Friday, twice on Saturday, and once on Sunday.

Sacramento State won the first game, 6-2, before taking the nightcap, 3-2.

The Aggies won the nightcap, 4-1, in a game that was shortened to five innings because of darkness.

The Gaels won the second game, 2-0, behind a three-hit shutout from pitcher Lujane Mussadi.

Sacramento State (3-2) opens its home portion of the schedule on Tuesday when the team hosts Pacific (2-0) for a single game at 2:30 p.m. The Hornets then return to action later in the week when they travel to Saint Mary’s (0-5) for a doubleheader on Saturday at noon. The Hornets and Gaels used to be rivals in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference, but Sacramento State switched leagues to the newly-formed Big Sky Conference this season.

Sacramento State right-hander Caitlin Brooks allowed just one run and four hits, and center fielder Kelli Frye threw out a runner at the plate in the seventh inning to highlight the Hornets’ 2-1 victory over UC Davis in the fourth round of the Fresno State Softball Kickoff. Later in the day, the Hornets dropped a 3-2 decision to tournament host Fresno State in the fifth and final round.

Sacramento State rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the seventh inning to win its first game of the day over Southern Miss, 3-2, in the second round of the Fresno State Softball Kickoff Saturday morning at Bulldog Diamond. In the second game of the day (and third round of the tournament), the Hornets fell to UC Riverside, 2-1.

NAKKEN AND BLAIR BOTH RECIPIENTS OF NFCA SCHOLAR-ATHLETE ACCOLADES
Sacramento State softball’s Alyssa Nakken and Lauren Blair both received the Scholar-Athlete Award from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) after recording a 3.5 gpa or better during the 2011-12 academic year. The NFCA announced each of the award winners yesterday.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? FORMER SOFTBALL PLAYER ANDREA BECKER
Former Sacramento State softball player Andrea Becker was recently named as an assistant men’s volleyball coach at UCLA. Becker is an assistant professor in the kinesiology department at Cal State Fullerton, and will take a one-year sabbatical from Fullerton to serve on UCLA’s coaching staff as a sports psychologist.
