MALIBU, Calif. -- Sacramento State dropped a pair of 5-0 decisions to 8th-ranked Cal Poly and CSU Bakersfield in the first and second rounds of the Big West Conference Beach Volleyball Tournament on Friday at Zuma Beach.
The losses mark the end of the season for Sacramento State, as the double elimination tournament marked the final event of the year for the Hornets. Cal Poly improved to 22-10 with the win, and Bakersfield moved its record to 9-14. Of Sacramento State's 19 losses this year, seven came against nationally ranked opponents.
Sacramento State, which has used a young lineup all season long, played six underclassmen today, including three freshmen and three sophomores.
The Hornets dropped all five doubles matches to the nationally ranked Mustangs in straight sets, while playing four very close doubles matches against CSU Bakersfield. That includes Mikaela Nocetti/Sarah Davis falling in three sets (15-11 in the third), and Skyler Takeda/Macey Hayden also falling in three sets (15-10 in the third).
Today marked the conclusion of the Hornets' seventh year of beach volleyball.
